This is the problem with college football

Didn't we suck those years? I really have no clue. It seems like if we sucked, it would be easy to get s good OOC. Just look at schools like Arkansas St, who I think played Nebraska and Oregon this year. Sun Belt teams tend to have a high OOC...

Also, we played SMU in conference that year. We've always played them one way or another. Virginia was added a while back, and if I remember correctly, they weren't bad then. And wasn't Grambling added because we needed a new OOC team because of Oklahoma?

Was I supposed to type something here?
I seem to remember that a lot of schools wanted to schedule us when we would be an easy OOC win... Now, that is not the case.

I also seem to remember that we had Nebraska scheduled at ACS for the opening game of the 2000 season, and Fran cancelled the game as one of his first acts as HC. This was sad, as we had a fine team that season, and such a game would have really put us on the map. But, alas...

I think we were supposed to be a cupcake, but we lost the 3 games (all away I believe) by only a combined 12 points. 1 point loss to Auburn so we almost spoiled their homecoming.

The problem with not doing research before making generalizations:

1966 final records:

Auburn: 4-6 (1-6 SEC)
Ohio St.: 4-5 (3-4 Big 10)
Nebraska 9-2 (6-1 Big 8)

Only one good team on that schedule.

You can't know the team's record before you schedule them.

SMU and Virginia combined to go 16-10 the year before we scheduled them. Not our fault they went 11-14 the year we played them. You can't know the team's record before you schedule them.

Exactly. Not sure how it was done then, but now the schedules are agreed to so far in advance even if you schedule a good opponent they may fall off the cliff before the game. Look at our Arizona series in the early 2000s. Same with Stanford. Just because a team is good today that you schedule doesn't mean that by 2018 or 2020 when the game happens they still will be.

Virginia at least is a decent program in a decent conference, no shame scheduling them. And we play SMU for rivalry reasons, not because they're a cake game.

The years up to 66, TCU was in the mid range with records hovering right above or below .500. '65 included wins over UT and A&M (and Florida St but they were middle of the road back then).

That is one of the casualties of the BCS system. Chasing the rankings has made cowards out of all the AD's. As a result, we get to watch the garbage match ups they schedule during the regular season.
