The Spun: Former TCU Coach Gary Patterson Makes His Intentions About Coaching Clear

6-7 last year after bowl blowout loss to Oregon State. 5-5 this year with likely 2 losses to go vs. Mizzou and FSU. That ain't cuttin' it.
Just goes to show. All those saying I told you so about Dykes, most of them would have been thrilled with Napier. Would be nice if people would just let things play out a bit, this thing where coaches are getting fired as soon as they struggle for a year or two is ridiculous. Napier may well be a very good coach, but he likely won't get much of a chance to show it.

Hope sells I guess. So whenever you get a new guy you can always sell that hope that this time it's all going to work out. And it rarely does.

Sonnys team quit on him this year against K state (laughing on the sidelines the entire game). So what’s the difference? Does sonny get a longer leash than the guy that built our program from the ground up?
No,but Gary's teams had been in decline for several years. Sonny's had 1 bad season, after exceeding expectations last year. Now, if this crap continues into next season, then yes, his situation would warrant reexamination.

Wanting Aranda here as a DC makes a lot more sense than wanting GP back here a s a head coach. WHY is what you'd have to ask there....because he had a couple good teams here 10 years ago? In his last SIX seasons at TCU he was 38-32 overall and 24-26 in the Big 12. That's a very extended period of mediocrity to end his tenure here......and you want to bring him back? WHY?

I remember when Billy Napier was most frog fan's top candidate. Almost a can't miss guy because he coached under Saban and was real organized and stuff. LOL. He's already about to get fired?
He did really well at Louisiana, though. Arranda hadn't been a head coach, so it's possible he's one of those guys who can't make the jump from coordinator. I would have liked Napier, personally, and I don't know that whatever happens at Florida means he wouldn't have worked out here; sometimes it's about fit, timing, etc. That said, I thought Sonny was a solid B+ hire. Last year it looked a lot better, and it might still be that. I still think Sonny was a decent hire.

All of this just underscores what we learn at this time of every season: there are no "sure thing" hires and every time you change head football coach you're rolling the dice, so don't be too hasty and try not to have a near-$100M guaranteed buyout.

I don't get all the love for Aranda. And frankly, we don't need another Baylor reject on our coaching staff. Too many of those already.

Plus, if we are stuck with tape fingers, some smug clapping on the sideline after a busted play is all I need to send me over the edge...

As with any hire, tell me who the real options are, and then I'll tell you who i would prefer. Knowing the guy I prefer might flame out, just like any other guy could.

I think some of you might be surprised at how limited our options are for some of these openings. It's either going to be a guy that's "failed" somewhere else or an obscure guy you've barely heard of.

I hear what you're saying. But take a Bama, LSU, tOSU, or some other blue blood reject over another BU-ex on the sideline.

Perhaps Dan said it best, "A man can travel far and wide – all the way to shame or glory and back again – but he ain’t never gonna find nothin’ in this old world that’s dead solid perfect."

Getting paid $76M not to do your job anymore is pretty close to perfect, I reckon. But there's few that lucky, and almost as few stupid enough to pay it.

Didn’t ask why you don’t want AWHCGMFP back as coach of the Frogs. I asked why you want Aranda here as our DC. Again…Why?

I'm pretty indifferent to who our next DC is (if JG is let go). I trust the decision makers more than my judgment and for sure more than people on this board.

I just think based on his history, Aranda would be a solid choice. As solid as about anyone else we could get. Maybe too solid as I wouldn't be surprised if he got offers from higher-profile programs (USC??). It's always a crapshoot though.

I saw Frogs lose 46-3 there this year.
Interesting stat: worst margins of defeat since GMFP took over:

2022 65-7 to Georgia (Dykes)
2021 63-17 to OSU (Kill)
2023 41-3 to KSU (Dykes)
2018 47-10 to WVU (Patterson)
2004 70-35 to Tech (Patterson)
2021 48-14 to ISU (Kill)

So four of the worst six losses in the last 24 years have been in the last 3 years. That is interesting. I'd say Georgia is the best team the program faced in those 24 years though, by maybe a decent margin, although that 2017 OU team that manhandled us twice might not have been far behind.

OSU and ISU were the biggest quits of them all
KSU and WVU just kicked our ass
Tech wasn't as bad as the final score, we were actually tied at half

7 returning starters and the defense is very mediocre due to awful coaching, player development and player execution. Briles is horrific in the red zone and when it counts. What is our record in 1 score games this year?
