Women's basketball fans likely expected Hailey Van Lith to play a key role even as a rookie for the Chicago Sky.

But in their opening loss to the Indiana Fever, the Sky only gave Van Lith four minutes, all in garbage time.

The lefty who spent time at Louisville, LSU and TCU in college was mostly resigned to watching as Caitlin Clark and the Fever handled the Sky.

Chicago coach Tyler Marsh explained the logic to reporters on Wednesday. The main key? Future Hall of Fame point guard Courtney Vandersloot.

She'll be okay in Chicago. Her social media following insulates her. She'll get some minutes. She'll learn from Vandersloot, and she'll get to play elsewhere in the off-season. The W isn't a place to will yourself to glory or rely on opponents not knowing how to defend lefties. Age-wise, she's not a rookie, but she'll benefit from time going against veteran players in practice to figure out how to minimize her weaknesses and maximize her strengths. Meanwhile, she'll be an asset in the locker room, pushing everyone to match her work ethic.

This is a 5-9 (maybe) player who is often a step slow on D and was projected as a second- or third-round pick six months ago. She's tough as nails, and I wouldn't bet against her becoming a solid starter in the W, but those who thought she'd be an immediate impact player might reassess their expectations.

So you spent your top 10 draft pick on someone you weren’t intending to play? wat.
It's a 13-team league with 12-player rosters. That's 156 total players in the league, so it's not a deep pool to play in. If there's 15% turnover, that's 24 roster spots for rookies. That's the reason the draft only goes 3 rounds. Expansion club Golden State not only isn't playing any of their draft picks, they released all of them, including their first-round pick.

HVL tallied 4 points and 6 assists in 15 minutes last night.

(And I suspect Clark is too much of an NBA fan to take on the W's owner.)

WNBA is the only league that says “You just finished a 5 month long college season, why don’t you do it again right away.” You gotta give these rookies at least a year to acclimate.
