It's been well-documented that Landry and Lombardi were the DC and OC of the Giants back in the '50s, and were life-long friends, but bitter professional rivals. They even carpooled together while coaching in New York.
The Packers reportedly spent $80,000 on massive heating coils buried under the playing surface of Lambeau Field, but the coils either malfunctioned, or were intentionally turned off by the Packers to help foster the icy conditions they considered an advantage to their rushing-based offense.
The temperature was -15, but the wind chill was more like -50. According to one source an elderly fan died in the stands, due to exposure. When the head official blew his whistle to signal the opening kickoff, his whistle supposedly froze to his lips. The flesh was ripped off as he tried to dislodge it, and the blood instantly froze to his upper lip. Officials used verbal commands and hand signals for the remainder of the game. Frank Gifford was a color analyst on the broadcast and at one point quipped, "I'm going to take a bite out of my coffee."
The word is terribly overused and misused in today's lexicon, but the Ice Bowl was truly "epic."
