Tech apparently using two DCs next season

Tech will run a two defensive coordinator system apparently with one of the co-DCs being Mike Smith, a former All-American linebacker at Tech. No word on who the other may be. This is yet another former alumni and teammate hire by Kingsbury. Smith has been coaching for the Jets this year in some capacity but I don't know of anything else about him really aside from him being a pretty good player back in the day.

None of my Tech friends seem too concerned by this hire and are excited about it but I just can't help but keep wondering about the quality of a staff with so many young and not very experienced coaches. I guess they'll be able to sell LBK (an amazingly difficult feat for good reasons) to recruits better than Tubs will though since they played at Tech.

Agreed. Well they're all pretty stoked right now. But if this turns out badly, I can only hope KK gets out alive...they are worshipping him like a god currently and if he fails to live up to the mythological expectations currently being placed on him, Tech may go into apocalypse survival mode.

Dual co-ordinators is not uncommon. We've done it on the offensive side of the ball for years.

KK relying on young tech alumni to fill out his staff is another matter. Pretty risky to assemble a staff that can't or won't say no to the HC.

Tech made a high risk/high reward type of hire. KK will either be a Mike Leach that can recruit, or he'll flame out. I don't know which is more likely but it will be fun to watch.

Everyone is getting a "coordinator" title. We used to have 2 co-offensive coordinators plus an assistant head coach. Just like a corporation that has 50 VPs.

This guy has jumped around a LOT. He accepted a job with Mike Leach's staff at Wazzu, then got promoted by the Jets and stuck with them. Then he accepted another job at WVU, but backed out of it when he realized that he wouldn't have as much responsibility as he initially believed.

Certainly seems like a waffler, if nothing else.

This is basically it. Don't let our crazed excitement lead you guys to believe that we are expecting to go 10-2 next season. We think 6-6, 7-5 is pretty realistic though.

I think you guys might be underestimating the "tech mentality" sort of thing. Tech does very well when we play with attitude. That is what all these guys bring. There will be growing pains. But in the long haul it could work out very well for us. What should be scary is that tech is united. Leach showed what a united Tech can do.

Also, consider this. Tech has historically been awful on defense. we went 8-5 with Willis in Tubs first year with an awful defense. Then 5-7 with an even worse defense. Then 7-5 with a decent one. Tech will improve on Offense with KK's playcalling, and our defense might suck for a few more seasons until KK gets some clout and can bring in a good DC.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand what you mean by that. I see Tech fans say that all the time but I just don't get it. I consider myself a dual fan of both TCU and Tech, considering I have degrees from both, although admittedly my fondness for Tech has dwindled tremendously over the years due to their fans behavior and inability to live in reality. As such, I have followed Tech throughout the years and this "Leach fog" many Tech fans have is amazing.

I mean, what did a united Tech actually do?? NOTHING! Tech had a few 9 win seasons, one 11 win season, and the rest were their usual 7/8 wins per year...how is that some sort of improvement or proving what a united Tech can do?! In addition, not one conference championship was won during the Leach era.

Also, you can't really say historically Tech has been awful on defense when in actuality it was only under Leach that they were awful. Prior to him, Tech was actually known for it's defense at times under Dykes. It's good that the fanbase is somehow reunited, but I don't get why so many Tech fans equate that with success on the field. This is going to be a feast or famine hire for Tech and right now, with all the bro hires going on, it's starting to look like a famine may come. Who really knows though, he could become the next Nick Saban although I seriously doubt it.

This is just how fans are. Cowboys fans would want a coaching staff of Charlie Waters, Dan Reeves, etc., as their dream staff.

Tech needs to worry about having some experienced hands on deck. You need a mix.

He has hired three although the Smith hire apparently won't go through until the Jets season ends. He has hired a former teammate in Kevin Curtis, a former Tech player in Eric Morris, and now Smith. All are his age or younger if I remember correctly.
