I-35 sucks. Full stop. But it is a direct route. Construction is on going in Waco, so check your preferred mapping app.

We have been taking US 77 South to Victoria, then to the Ranch. A quick detour West at Rockdale will take you to 130, the toll road that bypasses Austin to the East, and thence to I-10 West. It's about an hour longer than 35, but may save your sanity.

Best advice is to take 35, but leave early in the morning. Like 6am early.

I-35 is a construction mess in Austin south of the Colorado River. TxDot is building the infrastructure to support a massive, below grade-level rebuild of The highway through the City.
Terrible traffic congestion 24/7. Crashes just about every day.
if you must drive I-35 at all, I recommend detouring around the downtown Austin part either by I—30 (better) or MoPac.
if weather is wet or God forbid wet and freezing, drivers on I-35 have my thoughts and prayers.

Drive it several times a year on Fridays. Leave Fort Worth around 10am and you’ll get to San Antonio around 2:30 (with no stopping). 130 really doesn’t save much time, but if you go that route, take 45 where it splits back west to I-35 in Buda rather than staying on 130 all the way down to I-10/Seguin.

For anyone going from Cowtown, I always go west and take 281 south through Stephenville, Johnson City, etc. probably a few extra miles but MUCH prettier than 35 and way less stress because 18-wheelers are pretty uncommon

From Fort Worth if your willing to take Chisolm Trail Pkwy, you can hit 67 to 220 and connect to 281 at Hico and cut quite a bit of that drive.
