Their rationale for A&M is a rebuilt line (valid), losing their defensive star (Ok, maybe) and losing Kingsbury (And based on the Cotton Bowl they wont miss him at all).

I think it was accurate at the time. After all the (edit: personnel) losses though, things changed quite a bit.

Impressive though when you consider that no other team in his top 15 had less than 10 wins this year.
Shows that at least some people value TCU as a program to be reconned with.

That's like saying any preseason ranking of the 1970 Marshall team was a bit optimistic. Actually, at this time last year we had Pachall, Brock, Gildon, James, Wesley, etc., etc. So that was not a bit optimistic. That is like saying my kid is in the last year of medical school and will become a doctor, and they die in a car crash. Was the parent being optimistic?

Not optimistic, just assuming normal retention. #13 may be pessimistic considering who we have coming back next year. Or the high rankings by many assume Manziel will be back at a$m. Of course we know anything short of injury will not keep him out. Certainly any drug dealing, DUI, illegal gambling, etc. will be swept under the rug, aggie-style.
