TCU Football Has Plenty of Defensive-Line Depth. But Is It Real?​

Former TCU linebacker Jason Phillips explains why the number of players in a defensive-line rotation matters far less than what happens to the rest of the defense when the starters come out.

Former TCU linebacker Jason Phillips knows what a defensive lineman can do to make a linebacker's job easier, and what happens when he doesn't. He explains what he'll be watching to determine whether the Horned Frogs' defensive-line depth is as strong on the field as it looks on paper.

If you're measuring TCU's defensive-line depth by numbers, there's plenty to like. The Frogs enter this season with 11 defensive tackles and 12 edge players on the roster. They return starters Markis Deal and Ansel Din-Mbuh inside, along with experienced players like Paul Oyewale and Zach Chapman outside.

Those numbers show TCU has depth on paper. They don't tell us yet how much of that depth the Frogs can actually trust.

After playing linebacker my whole career, I learned to measure defensive-line depth differently.
