LaDainian Tomlinson electrified college football in the early 2000s before becoming a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Quarterback Max Duggan led TCU to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game during the 2022 season and finished as a Heisman finalist, bringing the program closer than it has come in decades.

Tomlinson was also a finalist, so it wasn't that accomplishment that brought us closer. Max's #2 finish was higher than LT's #4, though.

As I recall the story from Leap he lost to an Ohio State player with the thinking he would it the following year, but Swink was hampered with injuries and didn't have the numbers.

I read about this. I believe that the award at the time almost always went to a senior. So, like you said, most people voted for the senior with the idea that Swink would have his time the following season. I believe his numbers his junior year were quite a bit better than the guy who actually won.

Yes that is what Leap always said. Swink was better that year but they awarded the senior.

Interesting to read further into this. That Ohio State player was Hopalong Cassady, and the next year the winner was a guy named Paul Hornung.
