Cam's next opponent will be Roberto Bautista Agut, who just beat Guido Pella 7-5, 6-3. Agut is the 15th seed; Norrie 21st. Agut hasn't faced Norrie since that famous Davis Cup match when Cam debuted for the British team and came back to win it in 5 sets after being down. This will be tough match-up because Agut is a smart cagey guy although he's mostly a clay specialist.

Nick Chappell has stayed in Santiago and will play Hernan Casanova in the opening round (Round of 32) shortly. Casanova is a womanizer from Argentina and has an ATP ranking of 340.

Norrie v. Bautista Agut is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (CDT) this evening and will be on the Tennis Channel.

Norrie v. Bautista Agut has finally started after a 3 hour delay at Indian Wells for a ticket to the Round of 16. It's 3-all now in the first set; Cam was broken early but broke back to even it. A little late night TCU tennis action tonight... Unfortunately, the Tennis Channel is showing Tiafoe-Hurkacz.

4-all now. The winner gets Andrey Rublev or Tommy Paul; also currently being played (Paul just took the first set).
5-4! Cam gets the late break!
6-4! The Camster takes the first set (he had to save a break point to do it).

0-1 in the 2nd. Cam had a break chance but couldn't convert. The Tennis Channel is now showing Medvedev-Krajinovic.
0-2. Not good. Another early break.
1-2! In a loong game with multiple deuces, Cam breaks back. Very windy in the desert tonight - it should work to Cam's advantage.
2-all. Cam holds easily over RBA. Rublev leading Paul in their 2nd set.
2-3. Rublev-Paul goes to a 3rd set.
3-all. Evans lost to Schwartzman today, so Cam has a chance to become the British #1 if he goes deep at this Masters 1000 event.
4-all. The Tennis Channel cut to Cam's match briefly - all points are being hotly contested, but it remains even on serve.
4-5. Must hold here.
5-all. Cam saves 2 set points and holds.
5-6. Cam is wearing a purple shirt and Facundo is wearing a TCU shirt (as usual). But it didn't help in that game...
Norrie falls 5-7 as RBA gets the key late break.

On to the 3rd set!
1-0! Cam gets the early break!
2-love! Norrie consolidates the early lead.
2-1. Cam had 2 break points, but RBA saves them.
3-1. (Paul beats Rublev, so the winner will play him).
3-2. The Tennis Channel will (finally) switch to Cam's match.
4-2. Whew! Cam goes down 15-40, but comes back to hold. RBA is playing exclusively to Norrie's backhand.
4-3. Love hold for RBA.
5-3! Who says Cam doesn't have weapons? Some really nice serves, with 2 aces gets the hold.

Cam Norrie advances to the Round of 16 at Indian Wells with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 W over 15th seeded Roberto Bautista Agut! Next up will be Tommy Paul and the winner of that one will face the winner between Ruud and Schwartzman. I wonder who Rybo will be rooting for as he's good friends with both Cam and Paul. I like Norrie's chances against Paul but not against either Schwartzman or (especially) Ruud.

Obviously have to hope Schwartzman can knock off Ruud, although pretty unlikely.

Gray wins his first set 6-4 in the 15K Futures tournament in Doha

Surely he's getting close to qualifying for Challenger qualies?
Alastair takes the match 4 and 2 over Joshua Paris (ATP# 1146, a fellow Brit) and is now into the Round of 16. Gray is currently #591, which is in range of some Challenger qualies, but not high enough for others. But it's certainly good enough for main draw Futures tourneys so he can skip those qualies.

He's the #4 seed in this tournament.. at the point where he's at the high end of Futures, low end of Challengers. I hope in the next month he can get into some Challenger qualies.

Norrie splits the first two sets against Paul. They are basically mirror images of one another, only Paul is a righty.

Norrie's first serve was pretty abysmal in set two.

In a statistic that's almost impossible to believe, Norrie is now 5 of 22 in break point chances. I've never seen anything like this. But he has the break lead

And he immediately gets broken back. The 3rd set has started with four straight breaks. Pretty bad tennis at this level tbh.

And Norrie breaks back for five straight. Now he's up a break (or perhaps "on break" as Norrie is forced to serve next)

The unthinkable happens and Norrie holds quickly. 4-2 now.

Norrie wins 6-2 in the 3rd set. Nice win and great finish. And with that win, moves up to a career high of #23. One more win and he will move up to #20 most likely, and become the British #1

In great news - Schwartzman beat Ruud.

Cam is now into the quarters at Indian Wells, which is by far the farthest he has ever gone in a Masters 1000 event. And Schwartzman's relatively easy 3 and 3 straight set takedown of Ruud arguably gives Norrie a better chance of making the semis. Schwartzman is tiny and plays a completely different game than the tall big hitters Cam has grown accustomed to frustrating - it's even more of a grind-it-out style than Norrie usually employs. Norrie-Schwartzman is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CDT) tomorrow. Should be a good one.;

Looks like Gray’s opponent, fellow Brit Storrie, withdrew this morning. Gray moves on. Think he’s in the quarters now, maybe semis.

That may be good for Alastair in singles, but Ryan James Storrie is also Gray's doubles partner in Doha, so it might mean he's out of the doubles now as well (they were scheduled to play in the quarters today). With a walkover, Ali will be in the quarters in singles. They're replaying Schwarztman v. Ruud on the Tennis Channel now, and it wasn't as easy as the score looked - Diego had lost 12 straight against the Top 10, but pulled it out late after multiple long rallies and long games.

The draw opened up for the winner between Cam and Diego - Medvedev (the top seed) was defeated by Dimitrov.

The Tennis Channel guys have been making some very interesting points about the pro game with the Indian Wells coverage. Essentially, because of the COVID-inspired 2-year roll for ATP points finally beginning to transition to the "normal" 1-year roll in August, we may be witnessing a rapid changing of the guard this Fall. Technically, the process won't conclude until next August, but because very little tennis was played between March of 2000 and the Fall of 2000, the rankings will really return to normal in about 4-5 months - March of 2022. So, all the players who were protected by the 2-year roll, have started to lose points and will continue to lose points. With Nadal and Federer (and Thiem) both out with injuries and Djoker only playing sparingly, there will be some major changes soon. Fed and Thiem will both drop out of the Top 10 after Indian Wells and won't be climbing back until they return. Other "protected" players will be dropping as well.

For Norrie, this can only be helpful. His rise has been since February and all points will remain. He might even qualify for Turin - the ATP Finals. He'll be Top 20 for sure - if not this week, soon thereafter. But it'll also help Rybakov - his grind all Spring was done to earn points within 1 year - and he should also keep rising. And it certainly opens the door for Gray as well - he's already up 500 spots - he could make a major jump too.
