TCU.. Learn a lesson from UTEP

A co-worker of mine played at UTEP during a coaching transition from Charlie Bailey to Gary Nord 1999-2000. UTEP went from 5-7 in Charlie Balieys last year to 8-4 (losses to Oklahoma, Boise, TCU, Texas A&M) in his last year under Coach Gary Nord. I asked what the difference was and was surprised with the answer. These are his words.

"Under Bailey the team was nothing but mean and tough SOBs. There was no team meaner and tougher than us. But practices were so intense that we were never healthy for games. We never had a healthy team. So in comes Gary Nord .. a player's coach and we are going only helmets on Mondays, we are like WHAT?!?! Half shells on Tuesdays and Wednesdays?!?!? So that season you have a group of mean SOB's that can't wait to bring the pain and are finally healthy? It was like.. finally! We combined Charlie Baileys toughness with a more laid-back approach regarding practices it was a perfect mix"

This stayed with me and I think TCU is going through the same thing. Bailey=Gary Patterson..... Gary Nord=Dykes. Gary Nord ended up going 2-9 in 2001, 2-10 in 2002, and 2-11 in 2003 before he was replaced by Mike Price in 2004. Our championship season was due to what Gary Patterson built and Dykes was able to fine tune.

Should Dykes be given another year ... He needs to produce a 10 win season .. just my 2 cents.

You make it sound like Charlie Bailey was a really good coach and then Nord came in and screwed it up. Bailey was 19-53-2 during his 6 1/2 years in El Paso. That's an average record of about 3-8.

So we aren't winning 10 this year. I guess if we go 9-3 next year Dykes should be shown the door? Really?

Charlie Bailey was not very successful at UTEP but he built a base that Nord was able to tweak into a winner. Same as Patterson and Dykes. Patterson was not very successful for a number of reasons during his last year 3-5 ... 6-4 the year before and 5-7 the year before that. But each player had the "Frog Factor". Dykes was great at turning the frog factor into a national championship participant but doesn't know how to create the frog factor himself. I think this is evident in this team and last year's team.

I am afraid that without this ability .. 5-7 wins is Dykes limit. I hope I am wrong.. but doubt it.

He doesn’t even come close to making it sound that way. You just offered up your own straw man just to argue as usual.

TCU should play UTEP occasionally instead of LIU or Pine Bluff. It would be a great event to play them in the Sun Bowl in a one off. Accountants would kill it though and not see the value whatsoever.

The value of playing a one-off at UTEP escapes me, too.
I'm no accountant, and not really a decent bookkeeper as my CPA would no doubt attest (unless he is too polite).

That game is why I attended TCU.
I think what is being missed on this thread is the presence (or absence) of "Mean S.O.B. s" on the current TCU roster. I played HS Football with two players who started for Coach Bob Stull's UTEP teams in '85 & '87.

My former teammate Robert Pounds who won the Texas State HS heavyweight title and played linebacker in 1984 at UTEP, told me in mid-nineties that they had at least half a dozen feral dogs on those teams. Seth Joyner, who played for UTEP, and the Phil.Eagles was one of the Alphas who set the tone for those future teams.

Bailey was figuratively a Bob Stull assistant, and Nord was nothing more than Jerry Kill coaching TCU against Baylor in 2021. (Nord catching lighting in a bottle for 10 weeks and Kill for 3 weeks)

The Alpha dogs on the 2024 Roster are Savion Williams, Eric McAlister, Jack Bech on Offense. Not one player on defense. The potential alphas on both sides who are not contributors because of defensive/offensive scheme problems are: O Drake Dabney, D.J. Rogers, Jeremy Payne, Blake Nowell. D Devean Deal, Kaleb Elarms Orr, Jamel Johnson and yes Conner Lingren, Julian Knox CB.

Who are your Mean SOBs on the current TCU Roster ??

I am not altogether positive about these scores. The database is one with which I am not all that familiar, and the scores seem a bit unreasonable to me, so I'm not betting the farm my list is error-free. Anyone out there with better resources, please correct where necessary.
  1. October 12, 1963 - UT 28, UTEP 0 (Location: El Paso, TX)
  2. October 10, 1964 - UT 28, UTEP 7 (Location: El Paso, TX)

What about GP’s last 3.5 years showed that our players were mean SOBs?

2-9, 2-10, 2-11? Welp, we’re no where close to that but good analogy.

We’re bowl eligible and could end up with 8 or 9 wins. Enjoy the winning season.
