Men's schedule has been out for a few days and they tweeted it on Tuesday--so it must be time for a new thread!

Eleven tournaments on this year's schedule (as last year's). The Ewing family appear to have taken their annual all-expenses-paid tournament from West Coast to East Coast this season. The Frederica Cup replaces the Carmel Cup as the season opener. The Ewings' favored programs--TCU, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt--are in the field again, along with Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi State and Ohio State. Uncertain if the format will be 6-count-5 as in the past.

With the recent discussion about the need for a specialized facility if TCU plans to commit to its golf program, I note that Fin Ewing III's Texas Golf Hall of Fame bio mentions that he led the fundraising for state-of-the-art clubhouses at both Tech and Vandy.

Could such a facility be in TCU's future? If so, will there be incoming players to enjoy it? Seven of 12 players on the men's roster are seniors, so one would expect a big recruiting push this year. But as it appears to be the final season for head coach Bill Montigel, unsure what the sales pitch is to recruits--or who will be making it.

The other big question is whether Filippo Celli will be back for his junior (half)-season. In the past two years, he has played in the Italian Open in mid-September, and with his recent starts on the DP World Tour, I expect he will do so again. (In 2021, he missed the cut by 3.) In a recent interview he said he would re-evaluate his amateur status at the end of the year.

Two new names on the men's roster: Jack Beauchamp of Grapevine and Andrew Spaulding from Spring. Beauchamp had a pair of top-10s on the AGJA circuit in July, including a final-round 67 in the Jordan Spieth-sponsored event. Spaulding was runner-up in the Spieth tournament and may be entering the year in better form. Will be interesting to see if either can make their way into the lineup in the fall.

The TCU women have yet to release their fall schedule, although they have updated their roster. The women's squad welcomes newcomers Sofia Barroso Sa (Portugal) and Charlotte Cattaneo (Italy). Sofia is ranked 198 in WAGR and should join Caitlyn Macnab and Lois Lau as regular starters.

New grad Sabrina Iqbal is not listed, which I assume means that she opted out of a fifth COVID year. She is teeing it up today (along with TCU alum Annika Clark) in Stage 1 of the LPGA/Epson Tour Q School. Sabrina is still listed as an amateur, which probably just means that she plans not to turn pro unless she gains status on a tour. (The LPGA lets amateurs play in the first two qualifying stages; those who advance to the final Q Series in December have to compete as professionals.) I think the top 90 and ties from the field of 300+ advance to Stage 2 in October.

Pretty amazing draw that 3rd-ranked amateur (and A&M Aggie) Sam Bennett has had to navigate at the U.S. Amateur. His match play victories this week have come against amateurs ranked #13, 27, 10 and 9. Tomorrow he gets #8 Dylan Menante.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the draw, the quarters featured players ranked 51, 70, 552 and 1212. At least the better-ranked players came through.

I tried to like this guy.

And then he said, after beating Hagestad, “I’m the dog in this race.”

Super [ profanity ].

In Stockholm, Stefano Mazzoli finds himself on page 1 of a Challenge Tour leaderboard for the second time in three events. He's T7 going into the final round. He has seemed content to play on the smaller Italian circuit, which takes August off. Maybe time for him to move up a level.

It's cut day at the LPGA's massive Stage-1 Q school. By day's end, all 300+ players will have played each of the 3 courses and the top 125 will make the cut. After round 4, the top 100 will advance to Stage 2.

Sabrina Iqbal had been close to the cut line at +1 through 36 holes, but she shot a 7-under 65 this morning on the Arnold Palmer Course at Mission Hills to leap into the top 20. Big day for her.

Annika Clark (+5) is about to start round 3 at the Shadow Ridge Faldo Course, which has played slightly easier than the other two. She may need a 68 or better to make the cut.

Update: Clark birdies 3 of her last 5, but ran out of holes. Her +4 total will miss the cut by 2, it appears.

Stefano Mazzoli shoots a final-round 68 in Stockholm and finishes T6 -- his first top 10 on the Challenge Tour (in his fifth start). He'll be playing the next two Challenge events (Sweden again, then Belgium).

Congrats to Sabrina Iqbal for advancing to the second stage of LPGA/Epson Tour qualifying. Not a great round today but no big numbers. The next stage is in mid-October in Venice, FL.

Caitlyn Macnab will be teeing it up for South Africa at the Red Course (ou le Parcours Rouge si vous préférez le français) at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche early tomorrow as play kicks off in the World Amateur Team Championships.

Turn out, though, that she is not the only Frog playing. Freshman Sofia Barroso Sá is not only playing but serving as captain of Team Portugal.

A total of 53 countries are fielding teams in the women's competition for the Espirito Santo trophy. It's 72 holes of 3-count-2 stroke play over two courses--the other being Le Golf National's Albatross course which hosted the Ryder Cup a few years ago.

Best of luck to the Frogs as they represent their countries!

First-round results (out of a field of 167)
-1 (T9) Caitlyn Macnab
+1 (T54) Valeria Pacheco
+3 (T99) Sofia Barroso Sá

Team South Africa at -3 is T3, 2 shots behind the U.S. Puerto Rico and Portugal are in the bottom half of the field.

With a new season, it's worth looking at how former Frogs are doing in the Official World Golf Ranking. Last time we did this was July 2021. Last year's numbers are in parentheses.

46 – Hoge (129)
212 – Brun (177)
400 – Knappe (376)
490 – Barjon (249)
717 – Mazzoli (563)
730 – Ko (481)
875 – Ravetto (697)
1,014 – Celli (NR)
1,031 – Springer (NR)
2,211 – Castagnara (1,537)
2,211 – Henry (1,811)

Those at 2,211 have no points. The OWGR just came out this month with modifications to its system. Among them is that all players making the cut in recognized events earn some points. But I guess that hasn’t been applied retroactively, or J.J. Henry, who has made three PGA Tour cuts in the past 4 months, would have something more than zero.

Anyway, not a great past 13 months for Frogs other than Hoge, Celli and Springer.

Day 2 scores in France

+2 Macnab (T27) -- South Africa down to T9 in team standings; their #3 player has yet to break 80
+5 Pacheco (T53) -- Val the best on her team by far
+10 Sá (T95) -- Sofia too

Final scores:
+ 8 Macnab (T28) -- South Africa finished 15th as a team
+18 Sá (T83)
+30 Pacheco (T122) -- possibly not 100% for last 2 rounds

Meaningful day for Tom Hoge at the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta. Tom has posted rounds of 66-66-66, which would have him T3, a shot off the lead, without the playoff stroke adjustment.

As it is, he's currently in a 3-way tie for 7th. Large payoffs await in this final "playoff" event of the season. Tenth place earns $1 million; fourth place earns $4 mil.

TCU women's golf schedule is out. The women will get a crack at a couple of high-profile midwestern courses in the fall: Muirfield Village and Medinah. Glad to see the quality of tracks improving.

Frogs lose two accomplished seniors, including one of the program's best-ever players in Iqbal, so I wouldn't expect greatness from this squad, or even a repeat appearance at Grayhawk. They'll hope for a good transition to college golf from Barroso Sá, and for 1 or 2 returning players--King, Nguyen or Jordaan--to step up their game. I didn't see Jordaan post a competitive summer score, and I only saw the U.S. Am qualifier for Nguyen, so they may have been recovering from injury.

I think Sabrina Nguyen changed her national affiliation from the USA to Vietnam. That may give her an opportunity to take part in international competitions. Though she is well outside the top 1,000 in the amateur rankings, Nguyen is still one of the top female amateurs playing under that flag. https://vietnamgolfmagazine.net/en/...gan-1000-bac-tren-bxh-golf-nghiep-du-the-gioi
