With June nearly done, here's an update on some of the early summer play of TCU players.

Celli's European Am win (see above) tops the list. Was nice that the GoFrogs article mentioned Stefano Mazzoli as a former winner.

Jacob Skov Olesen won the Danish National Match Play Championship, winning 6 rounds of match play against a 64-man field. He saw the 18th hole only once in the event and won the final 4&2.

Gustav Frimodt qualified for match play at the (British) Amateur Championship and won a match before exiting in the Round of 32.

Brett Hamm finished T4 in a field of 81 at the Rice Planters Amateur in South Carolina, shooting 70-70-69.

Sabrina Iqbal was runner up in the Texas Women's Open, shooting -11 with a second-round 65 at Wildhorse. She was one shot out of a playoff.

Incoming freshman Sofia Barroso Sá finished T3 in the Spanish International Ladies' Amateur Championship. She shot 143 to qualify for match play and then won 3 matches before bowing out in the semifinals.

Lois Lau made the quarters of the French Ladies Championship Gaveau Cup, shooting 142 to make match play and rolling through her first two matches 5&3 and 8&6 before a tight 2&1 loss in the final 8 to the eventual champ.

Avery Blake and Trinity King finished joint runners-up in the Metroplex College Open on the Texas Collegiate Amateur Tour, shooting 222 over three rounds at Southern Oaks in Burleson to finish 3 back of University of North Texas's Audrey Tan. Good to see Avery playing well in competition.

Sabrina Nguyen finished T12 in an 80+ player qualifier in California for the U.S. Women's Amateur. She missed qualifying by 3 shots.

I may have missed some--please chime in with updates!

Stefano Mazzoli is playing well on the third-tier Alps Tour. He won the season-opener in Egypt (not especially alpine, but warm enough in February) and has six top-10 finishes in 12 events. He's sixth on the Order of Merit. He's won a tournament on that tour in each of the past three seasons.

Guess which Horned Frog is on the top page of a PGA Tour leaderboard today?

If you guessed Hoge, Barjon, or Henry, you'd be wrong. Not only is the Scottish Open a joint PGA Tour/DP World (European) Tour event, but the opposite-field Barbasol Championship in Kentucky is, too. Julien Brun is at -10 with two holes to play in Round 2, good for T8. Keep an eye on him this weekend.

J.J. shot a 66 today to make the weekend. Barjon is still struggling.

Scores: https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2022/barbasol-championship/leaderboard.html

Edit: Brun making the most of his moment on Golf Channel--just about flew his shot at the last (par-3 ninth) into the hole.

May have spoken too soon about Barjon. He was 4 shots off the cut with 5 to play, but he's made a pair of birdies and now hit it to 4 feet on 17 for an eagle attempt. Possible the cut will move to -6, though.

Edit: Barjon makes the eagle and pars the last to finish at -5. Might be enough to get through, but multiple weather delays have a lot of guys still on the course (and some who haven't even started round 2).

Had two more players made it to -6 this a.m., the cut line would have moved. But they didn't, and Barjon's late run makes it three Frogs playing on the weekend.

Brun rinses one on the 72nd hole to miss a top-20 PGA Tour finish. He ends up T27. Barjon T54; Henry T74.

Golf Channel's Brentley Romine put out a ranking of all 155 players in the Open Championship field. Filippo Celli was ranked 139th, 4th among the 6 amateurs. (Hoge was ranked just 101st coming off of 5 straight MCs following his top-10 finish at the PGA.)

Filippo Celli sporting a Colonial hat in his official Open Championship bio. Emphasis on his qualifying win at the European Am; TCU is not mentioned.

His practice round pairing today is with Bryson DeChambeau (interesting). Tomorrow he's paired with Fabrizio Zanotti (of Paraguay) and Mackenzie Hughes.

May be a chance to watch TCU's Filippo Celli on the Open Championship coverage in the next half hour. The featured-hole coverage is of holes 11-13, a stretch where Tom Hoge ran into trouble on his way to 74 this a.m. Hoge went triple-birdie-double, finding the pot bunkers that front the greens at 11 and 13.

Celli just made the turn at Even--or Level, if you prefer. He leads playing partners Darren Clarke and Richard Bland by 5.

Celli got some airtime (all 4 of his shots on the par-3 11th) and TCU was mentioned (his gear was all Italy), but he had two fantastic shots in that stretch that were missed by the coverage.

One was a drive on the 345-yard 12th, where the pin was perched on a narrow shelf. His drive ran up to 6 feet from the hole. Probably the closest shot there all day; would have been great to see it, but he missed the eagle payoff.

On 13 they showed his 3rd shot (after he pitched out following a bunkered drive). The hole is playing as the toughest, downwind with pin tucked behind a front pot bunker, and he was shown looking frustrated after his approach landed pin high and rolled out way beyond. Then they missed him holing the 79-foot putt to save par!

He has since birdied the par-5 14th to get back to Even. Nice round.

Edit: Harsh introduction to the Road Hole. After a perfect drive (377 yards), Celli got a bid greedy going for the pin. Earned himself a tour of both the Road Hole Bunker and the road itself on his way to a 6. He finishes +2, matching Hoge.

A poor qualifying round at the Texas State Amateur slotted Trinity King into the third flight. But she took the lemons and made lemonade, winning three consecutive matches to emerge as flight champ (7&5, 3&2, and 19 holes in the final over Texas State's Federica Tavelli-Westerlund). A week of match-play experience that finished better than it started.

Andrew Presley shoots four rounds in the 60s and finishes solo third at the APT tournament in Texarkana. His second top-5 finish and third in 8 events. @First Tee Frog said last fall that he was playing well; hope he'll have opportunities to move up soon.

All of the other amateurs at St. Andrews have now completed their tournaments. Best score of that group is Aaron Rai at +1. TCU junior Filippo Celli is at -3 with 7 holes to play. Silver medal for low am awaits if he can get home at Even or better.

Edit: Celli eagles the 14th! Now at -5.
