TCU's players have begun to make the turn in Albuquerque. Valeria Pacheco just eagled the 9th hole and the Frogs are even for the day, +7 for the tournament. They are still holding onto fourth place as they seek the last of the four qualifying spots for nationals.

They have widened the margin over playing partners Arizona and Florida to 4 and 6 shots--which is saying something, as 9 of the 10 starters on those teams are ranked among the top 300 world amateurs, while 2 of TCU's starters are outside of the top 800 in WAGR.

More surprising is that the Frogs' closest challenger is Sam Houston State, a team outside the top 50 which has essentially been playing with 4 players; the other was subbed out after posting 84-84 over the first two rounds. Bearkats are 3 shots back playing on the opposite nine.

TCU did not finish strong in either of the first two rounds--+7 on their final three holes. They need a good finish today.

Edit: And just as I posted that, a couple of bogeys have the Frogs' margin down to 1. Will be a tense final nine holes.

Frogs have dropped into 5th. It's a battle with players on holes 13-17:

Oregon, Georgia, Texas are 1-2-3, then...
+ 9 Arizona
+10 TCU
+10 Florida
+13 SHSU

Good news is that all 5 cards for TCU are in play at +2 or better; Florida has one player at +7 and will need to count the others.

Macnab and Iqbal both still alive to advance as individuals if the Frogs are unable to advance as a team. Both are -1, which would be the cutoff--would hate for them to have to playoff against each other for the second individual spot.

Florida takes charge with an eagle and a pair of birdies to get to +7.
Frogs and Arizona at +10. Sam Houston has fallen back to +16.

Update 1: Iqbal eagles the 14th! Frogs back into fourth!
+7 TCU
+8 Florida
+9 Arizona

Update 2: Frogs & Gators now tied; 3 players for each team still on the course playing 17 & 18.
+ 8 TCU
+ 8 Florida
+10 Arizona

Also, the 3 teams ahead of the Frogs & Gators are several holes back. Best chance of a collapse from those teams is Texas, which is currently +1.

Update 3: Brutal triple-bogey at the 17th.
+ 9 Florida
+11 TCU
+11 Arizona

Congratulations again to the TCU women on advancing to nationals for the first time since 2010.

Before this week, the Frogs were 7-34-1 against teams that finished the regular season in the top 25. They went 2-2 this week to punch their ticket.

Quite the story that Top posted from the ABQ Journal about Valeria Pacheco's father having emergency gall bladder surgery instead of being at the course. Glad he's doing well, and semi-glad she was in the dark so she could focus on golf.

Some seriously low scores in McKinney. Hoge shoots 68...and is 8 shots back. He was in one of the featured groups today, so quite a bit of video of him on pgatour.com, including this chip-in where the commentator calls his shot.

Barjon with a 69; work to do to make the weekend. Killeen--well, through 14 holes, he's 12 down to playing partner Justin Lower.

Just noticed that James Hart du Preez is also in the Nelson field. Looks to have been a late addition, as he was not on the tour's field list last Friday.

Not sure when the last time a PGA Tour event had four Frogs in the field, but great to see the representation.

Today, James had drives of 402 (#10) and 392 yards but he also played a lot of tee shots for position. He shot 74.

Good day for Frogs at the Nelson. Killeen and du Preez won't play the weekend, but both broke par. Du Preez had a 68 that included two holes where he drove over the green on par-4s, including a 369-yard bomb on the 6th. It was his fourth-longest drive of the day.

Hoge and Barjon also both shot 68 and made the cut comfortably. A few clips from their rounds, including two from Hoge's opening stretch, when he was -4 through 5.

Justin Gums and Aymeric Laussot begin play this a.m. as individuals in the Bryan NCAA Regional at Traditions Golf Club, a Nicklaus Design. To advance to nationals, they will need to have one of the two lowest scores outside of players on the top-four teams, which usually means a top-10 finish. The field includes Pepperdine, A&M, Georgia, SMU, Kansas, Tennessee, and Arizona.

Among notable players on teams that seem less likely to advance: Current U.S. Am champ James Piot (Michigan State), former U.S. Am runner-up Ollie Osborne (SMU), and Boise State's Hugo Townsend.

Gums will be on the course at 9:31, Laussot in the last group at 10:04. Follow progress here: https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=player&tid=25460

Justin Gums with a 2-under 70 in Bryan. He's currently T11, a shot back of the best two scores not among the top-4 teams. A good start, especially considering he birdied none of the par-5s. And that one of his playing partners was putting up an 86.

Edit: Laussot made 3 late birdies to shoot a 1-under 71. He's T16.

Among teams of interest, Oklahoma State leads in Columbus; OU leads in Norman, where UT is 5th; Tech is 4th in New Haven; in Bryan, A&M is 3rd, SMU 6th and Kansas 7th.

Some of the weaker seeds making noise at men's regionals. Seton Hall (12 seed) is currently fourth in New Haven (Illinois in trouble); Denver (12 seed) is third in Stockton (Top-10 Washington in big trouble). In Norman, 9-seed Utah is giving Texas a battle, though I expect the Horns will pull through.

Gums and Laussot both at Even in Bryan after rounds of +2 and +1 respectively. They are 5 shots out of advancing as it now stands, with 9 guys to pass. Will take a special round tomorrow.

Among teams of interest, Oklahoma is 2nd and Texas T3 in Norman. Okie State is T1 in Columbus. Tech is 5th in New Haven; Raiders are two shots behind Georgia Southern and North Florida (7th and 8th seeds attempting a Spanish Moss Mafia takeover of Connecticut). In Bryan, Kansas has an outside shot (8 shots out of 4th); SMU is 13 back.

Teams from SC/GA/FL doing well--11 of 15 are in position to advance, which would be almost half the field at nationals.

Edit: Forgot that the men advance 5 teams from each region to nationals (vs. 4 for women). Kansas was only 5 back of 5th and has closed that gap completely this a.m. to lead Oregon State by 3. Five team qualifiers is also good for the guys attempting to qualify as individuals.

Laussot is -2 for the day and overall. He is currently one shot back of the final individual qualifying spot. He's chasing Alabama's Canon Claycomb and Oregon State's Carson Berry; he is tied with Boise State's Hugo Townsend.

Have you looked at the routing of that course at the Traditions? It's a disaster.
