TCU men are fielding six players at the Big 12 Match Play -- the sixth being sixth-year-senior Thomas Allkins, who once led the team in scoring but hasn't started for TCU in...quite a while. He goes up against UT's Will Thomsen. Other matches this a.m. between Frogs and Horns:

Justin Gums vs. Pierceson Coody
Chris Berzina vs. Cole Hammer
Jacob Skov Oleson vs. Travis Vick
Aymeric Laussot vs. Mason Nome
Gustav Frimodt vs. Parker Coody

They're on the course. Follow scoring here: http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=match&tid=24154&rid=1

Frogs fall 2-4 to Texas. Disappointing--TCU should have gotten a half out that matchup. In the decisive match, our guy was 3 up with 5 to play and managed to lose 1 up. (Edit--but in his defense, he only made 1 bogey in that stretch. Opponent won with birdies.)

It was good to see Thomas Allkins win his match yesterday. Last time he squared off against UT in match play he got trucked 8&7, so a bit of payback was due.

Frogs are on the course this morning against Oklahoma State. Cowboys went a perfect 12-0 in matches against Baylor and Iowa State, so their confidence has to be high. Tournament has been all chalk so far on both sides of the bracket.

I hope the Frogs show well this a.m. -- back in 2018 they halved with the OSU team that featured Hovland and Wolff. But my concern if they lose is that they may lose focus for their three remaining matches, which will all be very winnable. TCU has gone a combined 1-11 in their final match the last two years. No shame in going down to UT and OSU, but they need to show up sharp against Baylor, Iowa State, and whoever they draw in cross-pool play.

Frogs lead 4 of 6 matches vs. OSU at the turn.

Update: Frogs split with OSU, 3-3. On the board with a point!

Gustav Frimodt is 2-0 individually.

TCU men lose to Baylor 1-4-1. Classic loss of focus. Bears went 1-11 in Day 1 matches and then lost to the 10 seed the morning of Day 2. Of course they're going to sell out to salvage some pride. Frogs need to show up...but after shooting -1 as a group against UT and -2 against OSU, they post +11 against Baylor.

Good news is that the Frogs can still finish third in their pool with a chance at the top half of the standings if they beat Iowa State tomorrow morning. But they should have wrapped that up today.

Frogs eke out a tight win over Iowa State. Three matches went the distance and the Frogs hung on in all of them. They advance to play for 5th/6th this afternoon against Kansas or West Virginia.

Edit: Frogs will play Kansas, which squared a pair of 1-down matches on the last hole to get by K-State 2-1-3.

Frogs just clinched a win in the cross-pool matchup with Kansas to finish 5th overall. A pair of match wins today helps the Frogs finish 2-2-1 on the week.

Only match still on the course is Gustav Frimodt, who is putting the wraps on an undefeated week. He is 2 up with 2 to play, so he will finish 4-0-1 or 3-0-2.

Edit: Frimodt wins 2&1 to finish 4-0-1 for the week.

Julien Brun continues his hot play on the European Challenge Tour. He posts back-to-back 65s to top the leaderboard (with one other player) halfway through the Empordà Challenge in Girona, Spain.

A quick on-course interview reveals that Brun's resurgence followed a change in coach and a move to Prague--no wonder he nearly won the Czech Challenge.

At the same event, David Ravetto finishes birdie-birdie to make the cut on the number.

And Alexander Knappe, who someone said made a poor impression in his one season at TCU, continues to make an impression--in this case, on a bunker:

He shot 75 today to miss the cut.

TCU women are on the course in San Marcos at the Jim West Challenge. 36 holes today; 18 tomorrow. This is a tournament that has yielded low scores, so expect some aggressive play.

Frogs going with the same lineup as the last tournament: Iqbal, Pacheco, Macnab, Jordaan and Lau. They are paired with Florida State and Mizzou. Expect Oklahoma State to be the favorite; after that it's anyone's game in the 15-team field. Almost no weak squads in the field, so the ladies will need to bring it.

Winner! Julien Brun goes wire to wire and wins the Empordà Challenge in northeastern Spain by one shot. Jonathan Thomson posted -17 more than an hour before with a final-round 62, and Jesper Svensson in the group ahead caught Brun at -18, but Svensson finished bogey-bogey and Brun came home with 8 straight pars to earn the win. Besides the roughly $37,000 winning check, Brun moves to third on the order of merit with 2 events left.

Highlights from Brun's win, and his post-round interview. He was using a pushcart in earlier rounds but had his father on the bag for him today as he won. Nice.

Next week's tournament is at the same course.

The TCU women's golf record book needs to be kept in pencil these days.

A few weeks ago, the women posted the lowest single-round score in school history with a 277 and knocked 10 shots off the low 54-hole scoring record with 843 at the Sam Golden Invitational. And Sabrina Iqbal lowered the mark for low individual 54-hole mark by 5 shots (to 204).

The first mark was replaced today in the first round of the Jim West Invitational when the Frogs shot 12-under 276. The latter two records look primed to fall tomorrow. TCU needs to shoot 285 (-3) or better for the team mark and Caitlyn Macnab needs 71 or better to set the individual record.

The Frogs are second as a team at -19, 10 shots back of Oklahoma State and 4 up on third-place Florida State. No other team is within 10 shots of TCU.

Macnab posted 65-67 today to tie for the individual lead at -12. Sabrina Iqbal is T5 at -5. Lois Lau is T16 at -2.

Strangely, Caitlyn might have come off the course a little frustrated. With 4 holes left, she had a 5-shot lead on the field. She had a pair of bogeys on the closing stretch while Oklahoma State's Caley McGinty finished birdie-birdie-birdie to match her at -12. McGinty is ranked #3 in the just-released Golfstat individual rankings and 33rd in WAGR. She's very good, but Macnab is a player who can run away from the field when she gets hot. Will be interesting to see how she and McGinty play head to head tomorrow.

With Iqbal keeping up her fine play (she is #12 in Golfstat), Lau coming into form, and Pacheco and Jordaan ham-and-egging it to avoid over-par counting scores, TCU got about as much as it could out of two rounds. The Frogs are 18 shots up on 14th-ranked A&M.

Kissing Tree in San Marcos is very scorable, so the potential was there. But the Frogs did great to hang close with a top-2 team (which they'll be paired with tomorrow) and to put some distance between themselves and most of the chasing teams. A third-place finish would be very good, and even more is within reach.

TCU will be represented in the upcoming Spirit International by Filippo Celli, who will be among the two amateur men on the 4-player Italian team in early November at Whispering Pines. Celli will b at least the third TCU player to appear in the event--Mateo F de O and Alejandro Aguilera played for the Argentinian and Spanish teams, respectively, in the 2019 edition.

It's quite the elite-golf-camp-&-tournament event, and a great opportunity for top amateurs to rep their country. Here's an interview with Filippo in which he talks about the event and his experience at TCU: https://www.thespiritgolf.com/filippo-celli-team-italy/

Team lineups are still being determined, but I would expect to see Caitlyn Macnab get a nod to rep South Africa. The RSA is confirmed as a participant but I have not seen a lineup announced. Macnab is 7th in the GolfRSA women's amateur rankings, but she leads that list in points-per-event, and she is ranked 2nd in WAGR among South African women after Auburn's Kaleigh Telfer. I think already being in the States may be an additional consideration for national golf associations weighing travel costs.

Hayden Springer with a close call at the second stage of Korn Ferry Tour qualifying this past weekend.

He started with a 66 in the 72-hole event at Southern Hills Plantation Club (wow--in this day, surprised the KFT gets away with having an event hosted by a club with that name). But he was outside the cut line (top 19 and ties) going into the last round, and he needed four back-nine birdies to advance.

He birdied 10, 12 and 13. But a bogey at the par-5 16th (which he'd birdied in rounds 1-3) sunk his chances. He finished 27th.

It is not easy to make it as a pro golfer. Here's hoping Hayden can continue pursuing his dream.
