Sabrina Iqbal took part in the Chairman's Dinner at Augusta National tonight on the eve of the ANWA event.

Photo from the event that includes Sabrina and a few fellow competitors:

She has the next-to-last first-round tee time at the Champions Retreat course--she'll tee off at 11:39. Follow scoring here: https://www.anwagolf.com/en_US/scores/index.html

Sabrina is probably not among the favorites to advance to Saturday's final round at Augusta National (top 30); her current world amateur ranking is 178. But she has a history of performing well at challenging venues, so it will be great to see how she does. All competitors get to play a practice round at Augusta National on Friday.

For what it's worth, of the 44 foreign players in the field, 33 play (or played) college golf in the U.S.

Killeen is struggling -- +6 thru 16. But Tom Hoge just birdied the last 3 holes to get to -4 -- just a shot off the lead!

Meanwhile, in Augusta, Sabrina Iqbal is a couple of shots off the cutline with 11 holes to play in Round 2.

Update: Iqbal misses the cut by 6, but she beats Baylor's Gurleen Kaur, so Frogs over Bears. She had gotten into a rhythm in round 1 after a shaky start, but a weather delay interrupted the momentum and led to a long second day. Anyway, she will get to enjoy a stress-free round at Augusta National tomorrow.

Haven't seen a lot of Sabrina Iqbal in the ANWA media coverage, but her TCU golf bag gets some camera time as her foursome marches down what appears to be the 10th fairway on a cold morning (40s) at Augusta National. Video features interviews with her playing partners; fast-forward to the last 10 seconds for a glimpse of Sabrina and her caddie repping the Frogs. Not sure who Sabrina had on her bag during competition; players had the opportunity to use Augusta caddies for the AN course.

Happy Easter, everyone!

TCU fans in Arizona will have another chance to see Frog golfers in action--this time the men--when TCU plays the Wyoming Cowboy Classic starting tomorrow at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler. They'll be in Phoenix again next week (16th & 17th) at Papago Golf Club.

Will be interesting to see how the Frogs respond to the disaster at Stanford. They entered the tournament ranked 45th and came out of it ranked 74th. That huge drop moves the Frogs to the wrong side of the NCAA bubble. So, I think we'll see a motivated squad the next few weeks.

Unfortunately, this week's field isn't especially strong, so it would take something special to make up ground. San Diego State is the highest-ranked team in the field at 28th, with Stanford now 36th. Frogs will be gunning for a high finish against those teams and others that overtook them last week (Oregon, UNLV, San Diego). Better opportunities to make a rankings move will come next week and in the Big 12 Championship.

Frogs will start Fernandez de Oliveira, Oleson, Celli, Laussot and Ball. Follow scoring here: http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=21899

TCU freshman Filippo Celli was at the top of the leaderboard and the team was in second after the first round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (which is thoughtfully played in Arizona). Frogs finished the round with a flurry, going -7 over its final 3 holes to blow by playing partners UC Davis and several other teams.

Shooting -9 is good, but it will be a challenge to track down San Diego State, which discarded a 69 in posting -21 in round 1. Don't recall ever seeing a team throw out a -3 card. All five Aztecs are in the top 15 of a 120-player field.

Celli shot a seven-under 65. Kid can play. Challenge has seemed to be keeping him interested when he's not in contention--glad that won't be a problem this week.

Frogs are back on the course now for round 2.

TCU men post -1 in round 2 in Chandler after play was suspended last night. They enter the final round in 5th place but just 3 shots out of 2nd.

Round 2 started great and it looked like the Frogs might put pressure on San Diego State at the top, but the tide turned and the Frogs ended up losing 7 shots each to Stanford and San Diego (USD), despite a 68 from Aymeric Laussot. He and Celli are paired together, which is unusual (probably Covid-precautionary), but they are feeding off each other, with both in the top 12 individually.

Filippo Celli is -3 through 11 for the day, -9 for the tourney. One of 7 guys within 2 of the lead on the final nine in Arizona.

Frogs are in a 3-way battle for 3rd, with an outside chance at 2nd.

Update: Celli has a chance. Now -5 for the day, -11 for the tournament. A shot back (with 4 others) with 3 holes to play. He eagled his last hole in round 2 this a.m. Frogs now -12 as a team, which is best score for the day; battling Colorado for 2nd.

Now that is the round these Frogs are capable of. TCU men shoot -17 (66-67-68-70) in the final-round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. It ranks as the fourth-best round in relation to par in TCU history. It was the best score of the day by 5 shots and lifted the Frogs from 5th to solo 2nd.

Perhaps more importantly, it will help the Frogs in the rankings, which consider score differential. Frogs beat Stanford by 8, San Diego and UC Davis by 19, and they pulled 12 shots back on an 18-shot deficit to SDSU. That's what would be expected from a team ranked in the low 30s.

Individually, Filippo Celli finished T2 at -12, which is one of the 10 best 54-hole scores (in relation to par) in TCU history. He birdied his last hole for a bogey-free 66, and it it took a 65 with back-to-back closing birdies by Stanford's Barclay Brown to beat him.

Jakob Skov Oleson shot a 67 to finish solo 10th, and Aymeric Laussot was T11 for the Frogs.

Whatever TCU did differently this last week in practice, it paid off. And a little desperation regarding postseason prospects didn't hurt. Nice job, Frogs!

Frogs -17 for the day on a 7,334 yard course. I don't care if it's in the desert and the ball is rolling 50 yards, that's some good golf. Looking back, I'm not sure a team like Oklahoma State with Verplank, Watts, Michael Bradley (three Tour players, plus EJ Pfister, one of the best club pros for a long time) would have done that. I don't remember it happening very often. These guys can really play today.

I'm assuming there was no trouble right on any holes? :)

Those interested in seeing the TCU women play in Fort Worth will have an opportunity to do so tomorrow (Wednesday) at Shady Oaks. Frogs are taking part in a match-play competition against Baylor, with six morning and afternoon rounds starting at 8:30 and 1:30 respectively. It's free and open to the public.

They have another match coming up next Monday against North Texas at Hawks Creek.

These were late additions to the schedule. My guess is that Baylor reached out to Coach Angie to get the Bears some match-play experience before the NCAAs. Baylor has been ranked in the top 5 for most of the year (slipped recently) and it wouldn't be a surprise for them to advance to the final 8 next month.

The whole squad will get some playing time. Morning play will feature Lau, Nguyen, Bruner, Park, King and Do. Afternoon matches will include Lau, Nguyen, Bruner, Park, Iqbal and King.

The Frogs will be decided underdogs, but like the men vs. SMU, anything can happen in a one-day match-play event, and local support won't hurt! Plus, you can see the renovation to Shady that folks were talking about on another thread.

Qualifying was very different last week.

Qualifying was very different last week.

Can you say more about that? Would love to know what worked, given where they are in the season.

Last tourney: lost to
Stanford by 46
Oregon by 28
USD by 20
UCLA by 14
Today: beat
Stanford by 8
Oregon by 22
USD by 19
UCLA by 44

Minor downside: Frogs threw out the same card all 3 rounds this week. That player seems to do better grinding it out on scoring-resistant courses than to go low. With harder set-ups ahead, he may be needed--but I bet that spot is up for grabs next week.

Frogs lost 4 of 6 a.m. matches to Baylor, but all but one went at least 17 holes, so they've been competitive. And the TCU freshmen both won, which is good to build on. They'll have another try this afternoon.

Update: Frogs lose afternoon session 5-1, with half of the matches decided on the 18th. Greta Bruner won to prevent the shutout. All six of Baylor's players are ranked in the top 200 nationally, so each match win is a good one.

Frogs will host University of North Texas Monday at Hawk's Creek for more match play. University of North Texas is ranked 33rd, so it should be a competitive set of matches.
