TCU 360: Patterson introduces 2013 class in signing day presser

By J.D. Moore

National Signing Day always carries feelings of excitement and anticipation, but head coach Gary Patterson wants new recruits to realize they must prove themselves before the season's opening kickoff.

Patterson was complimentary of his class but said they still need to prove themselves at the next level.

"I call these kids paper tigers,” Patterson said about the recruits who are potential on paper. “When they come in the summer, it doesn't matter how many tackles they've made before. It's how you develop players and how they turn out."

The 2013 class features a variety of positions with an emphasis on defensive backs and linemen. Several players in the class have the potential to contribute immediately. ...

Could someone who has better roster knowledge please identify and discuss the transfer players who have been on the scout team this year?

I've heard so much talk about them - how most could have started in 2012, but I've never actually seen a rundown of them, and their skills.

Thanks in advance...

Go Frogs!

Very non-expert opinion. At least 2 players that left Texas for distant points may have gotten homesick.

Green - very well-thought-of running back out of high school (San Antonio, IIRC), signed with Nebraska. Ended up behind the starter on the depth chart, and may have found the Pelini coaching staff unpleasant to work with. Sort of reminds me of Aundre Dean and his situation.

Doctson - a big, tall receiver from the FW area that shipped out to Wyoming. He hurt us in the one game he played against us, for Wyo.

Apparently the staff did not hesitate to bet a scholly that each of these players had big time potential, even though both had a mandatory red shirt year when they transferred in.

What about JaJuan? What's his "Story"?

In his presser, GP said there are 12-15 players who did not play much/any last year due to injury or transfer rules who will be here this year. He also said that Catalon has developed tremendously from just last season.

Interesting year ahead.

Just to add a bit on Green, I know a guy that does a recruiting show for Nebraska on a ESPN affiliate up there. Told me Green wasn't in love with the cold, the power running game employed (he's not built like a burkhead who can take a bunch of hits, especially from big 10 size linemen, plus you saw that even burkhead couldn't do it without getting hurt,) and never really felt like he fit in great with coaches or players. Don't know how much of that is true, just what I was told.

Don't know about JuJuan Story.

Jenkins, the cb from LSU was apparently on the two deep as a true freshman, then fell out of favor with the coaches possibly due to not getting along well or a disagreement do some sort. Them you look at the depth chart and see that they are loaded and if you don't make it happen there quickly someone younger and faster is coming in to take your spot.

God dangit, I just typed out a freaking huge post, detailing these guys' history, strengths, weaknesses, and what not. I then accidentally forgot to switch tabs when searching for Doctson's Rivals profile and erased my entire post.

I'm not retyping it, but here's a link to all of their Rivals profiles, so you can at least see their offers and size, etc....

Cliffsnotes: Green and Story had offers from the entire country coming out of school. Jenkins had offers from UT and LSU, Patterson thinks he might be the most athletic CB to ever come through our program. Story is a great athlete, we'll see if he picks up the subtleties of being a college WR. Doctson is the opposite of Story, in that he is apparently a great route-runner and understands the position, but lacks elite athleticism.

Personally, I'm most excited about Green and Jenkins

If he didn't like BoP bc of the yelling and screaming, then he's not gonna like Coach P either.

Pretty good info in this thread, but Doctson is not on scholarship like some have posted. His mother is on staff at TCU and he gets free tuition, similar to Ryan Christian. I have heard very good things about him and wouldn't be surprised if he saw the field more than Story this year.

Are Johnson and Hicks going to even play? We already have to spread the carries from James, Catalon, and Green. Dotson, Story, and Jenkins will be real good.

I think Johnson will definitely play. Hicks probably redshirts. As much potential as Aaron Green has, he's still an unproven commodity. Aundre Dean came in with tons of hype and never really cracked the top 3 on the depth chart. I think Catalon will get the slight majority of the carries at the start of the season while Waymon works his way back to form and Green gets used to playing in games again. I'm excited to see Catalon make that Sophomore leap. He was really impressive as a Freshman.

Difference: Patterson doesn't appear to be a psychopath when he yells.
