TCU 360: Johnson -- “We’re not ready to compete”

By Tori Cummings

TCU, looking to end a three-game conference losing skid, took an early lead against the No. 16 Kansas State Wildcats, but the Frogs weren’t ready.

The Wildcats went on a 19-4 run in the first half to grab a lead they never relinquished after falling behind 10-5.

“It’s all about Kansas State,” TCU head coach Trent Johnson said. “We’re not ready to compete. We’re not ready to play with a team that caliber right now.”

Kansas State hit back-to-back three pointers to open the second half for a 44-27 lead. The Wildcats extended their lead to as much as 22 on their way to a 67-54 victory. ...

I believe he really is a good coach. He just does not have the players he needs to win. Losing three before conference even started made the situation even worse.

Count me as one who thinks that this guy can coach... honestly, we're just not in the same league athletically right now. The injuries hurt of course, but we just don't have the horses yet... it's pretty much that simple.

The kids are playing hard, and given their actual abilities, I think that they are playing relatively well. However, that means that you only get beat by 13 versus getting beat by 30 or more.

My buds & I counted about 5-6 KSU players that look like they could play football based upon pure muscle build alone... we have one guy that is even close to being that strong (McKinney).

Speaking of McKinney, that guy has really improved in one year. Coaches have really developed him... given time, I think that these guys can develop players. I never saw that much improvement from one year to the next in a player over the last 10 years. And I really like that Hill Jr. is getting a lot of playing time now... that will really help that kid.

McKinney is night and day different this year as a player. Coach Johnson and his staff have really turned him around. Keyan is player I'm worried about. He seems to have regressed this year and can't hit a bucket right now to save his life.

He's really the only outside threat that we have... other teams know it, so they really play him tough. Also, because the point guards as a whole are so good in this league, he's having to play tough D the entire time too... just don't think that he's ready for that yet.

He's having to play a completely different game than he had to play last year.

CTJ inherited a very tough situation to say the least. In that sense, I will not be too upset how this year turns out. I really do like his attitude and feel that he can improve things soon. He is a no nonsense guy that is very realistic about things. I really do like what he has done with McKinney and hopefully he can develop his own talent real soon. One thing I do like is that he is willing to bring in JUCO players and try to establish some momentum while developing players out of high school.

He has proven to be a great coach and recruiter already. Big time players coming next fall and currently we lead the b12 in defense. Not bad when you're missing 3 major players to injury.

I'm still giving TJ a chance. It's apparent we don't have the talent to compete. We fall short in just about every category - athleticism, size, height, shooting ability, dribbling, etc. Watching last night's game was like watching Fort Worth Club basketball...

Hopefully TJ works out. Otherwise, we have three options:
> Cheat like crazy
> Spend tons of $$$'s to hire a big name coach
> Hire a gimmick-type coach to gain some attention (FWIW, Billy Tubbs may have been in this category)

Overall, I hate the state of college basketball. There's nothing worse than watching 51-48 games. I'm really hoping run-and-gun makes a comeback. I would much rather see a 115-105 game.

All of our good recruits aren't here yet and the only real big 12 caliber player (maybe McKinney too) is out for the season. CJC screwed us but we should be in much better shape next year and once they frickin renovate the arena.

CTJ's 2013 class has more big 12 quality talent than CJC ever recruited in 4 mediocre years
