TCU 360: Construction at Lupton Stadium is first part of $8 million master plan

By J.D. Moore

Just as baseball players are gearing up for TCU's debut season in the Big 12, Lupton Stadium is getting prepared with an array of new construction projects.

Work at the baseball facility includes wind guards, new fences and fence padding, expanded warning tracks and a newly excavated hill on the right-field side of the stadium.

The construction is the first phase of an $8 million master plan being predominantly funded by donors. This phase of construction will increase the safety and comfort of fans, players and maintenance crews, Ross Bailey, the associate director of athletics, said.

Bailey said the fences were moved in because of a combination between a lackluster offense and a need for room for maintenance crews. He said collegiate bat requirements and strong south winds made it difficult for batters to hit home runs, while crews needed more room to maneuver behind the outfield wall. ...

There will still be the adventure area on sundays, as well as, plenty of room on the bottom part of the new terrace (up next to the visiting bullpen).

Talk about burying the lead. . .

TCU 360 would rather lead with a "look where your money is going from tuition instead of lowering tuition!"

Despite this is all from donor money which is also buried in the story. I remember when I was at TCU there were people outraged about building those corner gate type things at the edge of campus. The outrage!

Sad for the loss of the hill down the right field line. Now where are my kids going to run around during the game while I watch the game?

One of the reasons for the terracing is that too many parents were using the berm as a baby-sitter, the kids were mostly unsupervised, and the injury and liability risk were huge.

"Buried in the story"? The fact that the project is donor-funded is stated in the lead sentence of the third paragraph of an 11-paragraph article. That's hardly "buried."

One of the things that the moved in fences will do is produce more home runs. That is the thing we lost to the team last year. I am excited about that and the safety for kids will improve.

The hill has been an issue with Risk Management for many years. Thankfully, some donors stepped up and that was the first item addressed. It wasn't so much parents letting their kids loose, it was more about the safety of everyone on the hill. With the new terraced sections, there will be benched seating at the top of the sidewalk and 3 more levels of sitting/standing. It provides a better experience for the fan, all the while saving the university.

Also, a new event patio was installed right next to the visiting bullpen (up next to the field). Make sure to contact the marketing department if anyone is interested in renting it. Trust me, it is a great spot and will feature high-sitting chairs, tables (similar to the 3rd base patios), and a grill. Bring your own food and have fun

Not sure this is accurate, but you would know better as far as intent. I went out there last Sunday, and I believe the "risk to injury" is much higher now (four foot drop between levels).

Not a parent yet, but I always thought this was one of the beauties of TCU games. Tired of dealing with your rat-faced kid? Take him to a TCU game and tell him go kick rocks while you catch up on watching sports.

Just took away something for me to look forward to.

Yep. Bad parents ruining it for all. One of my favorite restaurants in Houston(Lupe Tortilla) had to close their sand boxes for liability reasons. Mainly because parents wouldn't control their kids. A friend actually had to walk a crying kid through the restaurant one day to find the kids parents.

Tell your friend 'thanks'. I had just gotten a refill on my Strawberry 'Rita, and I didn't want it to get all melty. Besides, those were cat litter boxes for the night shift to control rats in that joint. At least thats what I heard.

Huge liability given the location. Lots of foul balls end up in that area.

In one game, a line-drive foul was hit right at a guy holding a baby while watching his older son play on the berm. Fortunately the liner nicked the guy and missed the baby. Could have been tragic.
