Bill Belichick shocked the football world in December by agreeing to become the North Carolina Tar Heels' next head coach

The eight-time Super Bowl winner had not coached in the NFL since leaving the New England Patriots in 2023, and many expected him to fill one of the vacant head coaching positions this offseason.

But Belichick ultimately decided against a return to the National Football League, instead taking the plunge into college football for the first time in his career.

Belichick spends 20 minutes talking about the status of the UNC football program and says nothing surprising. Lots of support, recruiting is happening, wants players focused on day-to-day activity and conditioning, wants everybody do their job in every area. But I'm still posting it.

ESPN article this weekend described the behind-the-scenes activity at UNC for the Belichick hire. Kind of a mess. First, the firing of Mack Brown was a fiasco; he was dead-man-walking after giving up 70 at home to JMU, but AD Cunningham's efforts to get a successor lined up didn't stay on the down-low; then Mack tried to buy himself an extra season by making a public comment about retiring in 2025, and Cunningham gave him the boot, leading to (misplaced) backlash about how Mack was treated poorly.

Then, when Belichick campaigned for the job using two governors, the UNC board undercut Cunningham (who was searching elsewhere) and forced him to make a deal for Belichick, who then held UNC over a barrel for $10M/year plus $1.5M for his buddy as GM. Couldn't get his son named as coach-in-waiting, though.

Not sure this is going to go well in Chapel Hill.

If he wins, no one will care...
