Tackled in end zone, no safety?

Maybe I'm the only one besides the zebra who saw it this way. But I thought when Stone spun around he got the ball back across the goal line (forward progress) before he was knocked back and tackled in the EZ. Now, not the one yard line. Maybe the one foot line.

I’ve decided to weigh in, even though it might not be a popular opinion.
At that point in the game, whether it was a safety or not makes absolutely no difference In the outcome of the game.
I don’t know of a single Replay Official that would have stopped the game on that play. That would have been an unnecessary stop and wasted time. The on-field officials would have taken his beer away from him after the game.

Seems to me with all due respect that you call the game correctly till the final whistle regardless of the score or situation. I think a review was needed. I was already cooked to the bone. Another couple of minutes wouldn’t have mattered.

Thanks Zebra. I wish it was reviewed (not clear about if it was even reviewable given the call of forward progress) and I'm sure FS1 would have appreciated another commercial break

And then if the review results in the call on the field standing everyone still left in the stadium is shaking their head at the absurdity of stopping down the game at that point (in 100 degree heat no less) for a review. So that apparently pisses fans off too.

Virtually every time they call for a review late in a lopsided game all you get is a chorus of boos. Being an official is a thankless job.

The FS1 reference may have been in jest, and if so, I apologize in advance.

However, all networks have a predetermined number of commercial breaks per quarter, and extra stoppages do not warrant extra breaks.

When they have used up all those breaks, that’s when you’ll hear the announcers say things like, “We’re gonna keep it right here…”

Yes, I was poking fun at the sheer volume of media breaks we've seen this year.

Respectfully disagree. They didn't fail to call it correctly; they opted not to spend time confirming whether the on field call was correct.

The length of baseball games has shrunken greatly, and many people (including me) love it. Lengthening a football game to confirm near the end of a blowout that the runner got the ball out of the end zone is dumb (whether he tried to run after forward progress is stopped wouldn't be reviewable).

You're correct that Stone crossed the line and then recrossed back into end zone, where he got sacked. It's incorrect to call that "forward progress." Forward progress is "the end of advancement by the ball carrier or airborne pass receiver ... when [the ball] becomes dead by rule." (Rule 2-9-2)

The ball was still live when Stone retreated back into the end zone to evade the rush -- no defender had yet touched him. A voluntary retreat by the ball carrier while the ball is still live does not count as forward progress. It became a dead ball as soon as Stone was sacked in the end zone. That was a safety.
