What kind of [ deposit from a bull that looks like Art Briles ] is this?? If all that stuff is true then the NFL needs to boycott games played in California. There needs to be an earthquake large enough to make California fall off into the ocean. Sorry @LisaLT

Dude plenty of other states have a “jock tax” also.

California of course has the highest jock tax of 13.3%. More from Ai:

More than 20 U.S. states and several cities with professional sports teams enforce a "jock tax" on the income of visiting nonresident professional athletes, calculating tax based on duty days spent in the jurisdiction. Key states with high or notable taxes include California (up to 13.3%), New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Illinois.

Key States with Jock Taxes
  • California: Known for having the highest rate at 13.3%.
  • Illinois: Known as "Michael Jordan's revenge," taxed in retaliation to California.
  • Ohio: Often imposes taxes on visiting teams, although sometimes challenged in court.
  • Others:
New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Oregon, and more than 15 other states with income tax.

    States Without a Jock Tax
States with no personal income tax generally do not impose a jock tax on visiting players, including:

  • Florida
  • Texas
  • Nevada
  • Washington
  • Tennessee (post-2016)
  • Alaska
  • South Dakota
  • Wyoming
  • New Hampshire
Key Cities with Local Jock Taxes
  • Cleveland, Ohio: Known for aggressive taxation of visiting players.
  • Detroit, Michigan: H&R Block and Alpine Mar.
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: The Winston CPA Group.
  • Kansas City, Missouri: Kiplinger and The Winston CPA Group.
How the Tax Works
The tax is usually calculated based on "duty days"—the number of days an athlete spends in the state for training, games, and meetings divided by their total season duty days—multiplied by their total income. For example, a player on a $1 million salary playing one game in a state with a 10% tax might owe a portion of that $1 million based on that, Intuit TurboTax Blog explains.

So visiting athletes are double taxed on income in jock tax states??? You pay federal income tax on your overall earnings (and state income tax where applicable.) Then what income you earn in jock tax states is taxed again? Outrageous and unfair.
Are college athletes being hit by jock taxes?

That’s the same types of rules we face if we are contract labor. The tax codes apply for where the work is performed along w your permanent residence location.

I also believe the NBA and MLB players unions also included some league guidelines for the international games (ie canada) and I thought at one point including some tax subsidies.

league could easily get around this. include it in payment to the team in home state, etc. they chose not to.

That [ Finebaum ] is crazy. Imagine how much baseball players pay in jock tax. Look at how many trips the Rangers make every year to Cali just for division games with the A's and Angel's. It's even worse for the National League teams like Colorado and Arizona. They've got multiple road trips to LA, San Francisco and San Diego every season.

They gotta have money to dump into that high speed rail scam.

That's because of the California state tax. The jock tax only affects visiting teams players.
Sure, but it might be a little extra incentive to structure that way if your home field is in a high tax state and you minimize the double ding in half-a-dozen other states. But yeah, it would just be strictly an ancillary benefit.

It’s deductible against the taxes paid in their home state
