Carpenter records most productive single game ever for a Cardinals hitter

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch

CHICAGO • There were stretches during the days of having a subterranean batting average that Matt Carpenter didn’t recognize the statistics staring back at him from the scoreboard. They didn’t twinkle, they taunted, and at their most troubling he had to stonewall the idea those numbers might be telling.

He once admitted that his production was so paltry that he “might as well not have been around for the first 35 games.” Absence made the resolve grow stronger and when he finally had the swing to match, Carpenter raged ahead and no longer had to squint to see his stats.

Didn't know he declined another at bat-- discussed it with the manager. He said batting against a position player wasn't wanted.
Shows what kind of team player he is-- this guy goes about his job in a most unassuming way, and does it with style.
That changes my thoughts on him not getting another at bat. Very cool on his part

Didn’t realize that. It’s not fun having to pitch when that’s not what you do. Very cool of him.

Another Cardinal record has been broken by Carp this week. He hit his 22nd. lead off homer to pass the great Lou Brock whose 21 had stood for about 40 years. Matt takes it all in stride, and says he is proud to be mentioned in the same breath with Brock. He is the gift that keeps on giving.
