TCU transfer Olivia Miles "grateful" following move away from Hannah Hidalgo's Notre Dame

Former Notre Dame star and new TCU transfer Olivia Miles is one of the biggest stars in women's college basketball. Before the season ended, there was a lot of speculation that Miles would declare for the 2025 WNBA draft and start her pro career. However, she took a different path, entering the portal for one more college season and committing to TCU and leaving Hannah Hidalgo at Notre Dame.

On Thursday, at the Team USA trials for the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, Olivia Miles spoke with reporters about her excitement for the tournament before speaking about her decision to transfer to TCU.

Good interview brought down with the interviewer asking her about "the big move down to Dallas." Sigh.

Seemed like two things inspired her to choose the Frogs:
  1. The opportunity to have fun and rekindle joy. That's as much an indictment of the culture at Notre Dame as it is a credit to TCU and HCMC.
  2. The heavy pick-and-roll system will highlight her talent and versatility.
She said it wasn't TCU that led her to pass on the WNBA as much as having another year to heal more fully from her past knee injury. Interesting.

The same guy also interviewed Flau'jae Johnson and Gianna Kneepkens. I expect everyone from LSU to reflect Kim Mulkey's surly-arrogant vibe, but Johnson was fun and down-to-earth, and it was good to hear that she'd hit it off with Miles.

Miles with 11 points, 8 boards and 8 assists in USA's 37-point win over Colombia.

She's also very efficient, shooting 7 of 12 from the field through two games (whereas her former backcourt mate Hannah Hidalgo is 6 of 24).

I can see why Miles thought a change of scenery could be good.

Miles with 6/6/10 for the U.S. tonight as they finish group play undefeated (defeating Mexico by 56). She hasn't put up a lot of points but has shot above 50% in every game--unlike Hidalgo, who had another sub-30% outing.

Ten assists was a record for U.S. Americup play--with only 1 turnover. Miles takes pride in seeing the whole court and finding the open teammate. Watching the highlights from this tournament has me excited to see what she'll do at TCU.

Well, it's been all Hidalgo since the knockout stage began. Miles has had playing time but hasn't been sharp. Hidalgo continues to be a black hole on offense without being efficient. In the fourth quarter of a 3-point game against Canada, she started with two missed shots, two missed free throws, and a turnover. But she's a disruptor on defense (3 fourth-quarter steals) and knows how to get a shot. She was +18 in the 12-point win (while Miles was -10 and saw only garbage-time minutes late).

Miles has been the most efficient American player in the tournament, though, behind the 2 Brazilian bigs.

U.S. plays Brazil this evening for gold; a rematch of the 2023 final won by Brazil.
