Sonny, Please say goodbye to Briles

+ On TCU’s 1st drive of Q3, we had a 3rd & 5 @ the KSU 39.
* Hoover throws 2 incomplete passes on 3rd & 4th down. Turnover on downs.
* If we knew we were going for it on 4th down, why didn’t we just run twice for the 5 yds.??? Barnes was averaging 6.8 per carry!!!

+ On TCU’s 2nd drive of Q3,
* 1st down Hoover passing AGAIN! - Sack
* 2nd down Hoover passing AGAIN! - Pick 6.

+ On TCU’s 3rd drive of Q3,
* Hoover delay of game.
* False Start
* Barnes 1 yd run. (Last carry of the game)
* Hoover Passing - Illegal forward pass 5 yds & Loss of down
* Hoover Passing - 13 yds, 10 yards short of the marker.
* Punt from our own 25.

- Hoover passing, instead of Barnes running, is why we didn’t score on our 1st drive of 3Q
- Hoover passing on our 2nd drive is why we went down by 2 TDs
- Hoover mistakes and passing on our 3rd drive is why we had to punt from our own 25.

We abandoned the run and got ourselves into all kinds of trouble.
Run the skin of the pig!

Don’t disagree, at least not this past Saturday when it was working well. I was disappointed that we came out mostly throwing on the first drive of the second half. Especially after Barnes ripped off an 11 yard carry on the second play.

But that’s not what my post you quoted was about.

If we hadn’t come out throwing in the 3Q, the game would have been tied, or only 1 score worst case. Those 1st 3 drives got us into trouble.
If it wasn’t for those 3 drives, we could have mostly rushed the ball 50%+ the entire rest of the game. Eating clock and wearing them down.
KSU played a light 5-6 man box with a zone all day. That’s optimum for running the ball, yet we played right into their hands and threw it 47 times.

It was plain stupid, and Sonny was negligent by not questioning Briles after the very 1st 3Q drive.
It’s like Sonny is just a people manager, not a head coach strategy/decision maker.

it's amazing to see folks try and defend how tape fingers abandoned the run.
You are correct Sir ! One can go into paralysis due to over analysis as much as she wants. Oh, it was 2nd and 23 or it was second and 19. I think the facts are that the RB had a pretty decent YPC average W/O having enough carries to get a fluid rhythm. You do not deprive him of the ball for the rest of the game with 10:28 left in the 3rd?? This a recipe for disaster. There is 0 rationalization for this.

When you don't give the RB the ball for the rest of the game with 40% of the game left, you allow your opponent to pin their ears back and greatly increase the likelihood that Hoover will make a mistake.

James Cook, RB for Buffalo last Monday night was averaging over 5.0 YPC at halftime. James Cook is probably the smallest RB in NFL History with the highest pay AFI in History for a reason. The Bills throttled down the run game in the 2nd half and deservedly lost. About 90% of NFL RBs in the NFL average less than 4.5 YPC.

FWIW, James Cook at 189Lbs longest plays last season and this season were/are edge toss sweeps attacking the perimeter of the defense. TCU with all it's RBs including Nate Palmer had some pretty long stretch plays in the 1st couple games. Where have that perimeter attacking plays gone?

I made this chart to show were we are in the conference statistically. These are for Big 12 conference games only. We're in the bottom half of the conference in 17 of 30 categories. These probably won't come as a surprise overall, but the defense is probably worse than most think. We are dead last in 5 categories. We are averaging .8 yards per punt return, if anyone was wondering.

What stands out most? Offense: Rushing last. Sacks on Hoover 9th. Penalties 14th are the result of very very bad coaching. Now the defense that has not been helped by the offense. Defense: worst in 50% of the categories. Particularly 3rd & 4th down conversions. Too bad so sad.

Briles calls plays. Players are supposed to execute the plays. Coaches don’t coach mistakes and turnovers. Or drops. Players need to be accountable too.

I’d love to see that chart coupled with amount of snaps for each. Mainly for defense and how that stacks up with higher ranked teams. I’m assuming they’re on the field much more than the top ranked.

a 6 yard or 7 yard run on 2nd makes that 3rd down pass a little more managable and forces the second level to have to cheat up, giving a little more on the back end.

Now you guys make it sound like 6 or 7 yards is a given every time we run the ball. A couple weeks ago our OL sucked so bad, we couldn’t run the ball at all, and running up the middle was like a waste of a down.

It is hard to find that for the whole season, but would be interesting to put that together. You can pull the drive reports per game. You can go pull the K-State drives from this same link, but I was interested in our offensive possessions.
There is no doubt our D has a problem with getting off the field on 3rd down (and more specifically 3rd & long). However our offense, is not on the field very long at all, especially this last Saturday. On 13 total drives for the game, our average time of possession was 1:47!! Only 3 of those 13 possessions were longer than 2:00. I understand that this offense is designed to score quickly, but when you don't, and you only average 1:47 on the field, the D isn't getting much rest and is on the field a long time.

My memory is hazy but I think the Baylor QB went down with a spine injury in early November. Baylor had a RS freshman Jarrett Stidham that many had as NFL Caliber and is currently playing in the NFL unlike most other B12 QBs.
He's getting paid to be an NFL QB but playing is a stretch. He hasn't thrown a pass since 2023. Great gig if you can get it!
