Sonny’s Resume at TCU

Curt Cignetti shares his thoughts on Josh Hoover’s touchdown run to seal the #iufb’s Week 4 win. Was pleased with the result of the run, but was disappointed with Josh Hoover pointing before he crossed the goal line.

I like Hoover, but he is no Mendoza. But he also was the smart one to move out of the SD circus.

To simply look at the metrics you have presented is to clearly see that Sonny is doing less with more. We used to do more with less, but that's not how it is anymore.

The hell of it is, they gave this buffoon a raise and extension, fully cognizant of what you presented. And if they weren't aware of those numbers, shame on them.
I may have posted in another thread, but the big indictment is that all that talent that gave us those top recruiting classes didn't really make it on the field for TCU. So, I am not sure that less with more is completely accurate. It is more that the more never made an impact. To compare here is the 2020 4-star list and certainly there were misses but there were plenty of hits and that hit rate certainly is not what it used to be.

2020
Zach Evans (5-star)
Quentin Johnson
Patrick Jenkins
Garret Hayes
Savion Williams
DJ Rogers
Michael Nichols
Keontae Jenkins
Bud Clark
Quincy Brown

Was I supposed to type something here?

I would venture to say that Zach Evans, while a literal electric talent with the football, was a terrible cancer that eventually brought down Patterson. Some players become stars, some players just don't work out, and some are best avoided altogether.

You are so correct. In Sonny's case, the apple does not fall far from the tree. I told Donati the very same thing in multiple emails. Sonny's "role model" was Spike.
Spike was a much better HC. He was dealing with obstacles in Lubbock that made it damn hard to win consistently, but he did.

Cig is an ABC guy: always be coaching. Even the finer points. If you haven’t read about how he runs his practices, it’s worth a look. They have shorter practice times than everyone else, but with an intensity and insistence on no wasted moments. I hope we can find a guy like that. Kinda reminds me of when Tressel was at his peak at OSU.

Thinking the same thing and I come up with among others, Mike Shanahan, OC for Indiana and he's been with Cig for 10 years. Deserves a serious look but I'm not sure we have anyone at the University that would know what to do that's has authority to make these football decisions.

Had a thought, if Sonny were to be fired at the end of the year, which coaches would you consider keeping? The only one’s that I would even consider would be Malcom Kelly (as a recruiting coordinator; drops to me are an indicator of bad technique being taught), Mitch Kirsch (TE’s have been awesome), and Antonio Wilcox (RBs one of the few bright spots over the last 2-3 years).

Sonny in a nutshell
Morris over Duggan
Morris over Hoover
Jaden Craig
Miss on three coordinators (first DC, Sammis, Briles- did not endear Sonny to the fan base)
Losing dam near every Big 12 opener.
Lose to lesser teams
Letting your AD move a home game to Ireland (probably not much he could do but still not good)

Sonny made a statement today that he is going to find out what's going on with the team and why the disappointment,

My Suggestion Sonny is hire this man to council you and Kit, Pullin. and Buddie. It will save money and frustration in the ong run:

Nick Saban says NIL wasn't his reason for retirement, instead it was his age: "That’s not why I got out of coaching. We had three years of this, you know, my last three years. I coached in the NFL, so I was used to managing the salary cap and that type of thing." Saban added: "The one thing I didn’t want to do is ride the program down. And once you get a certain age, people start using that against you in recruiting and your ability to attract the kind of players that you want to attract."

I’m not taking anything away from our guys, that was such a fun game and win over a blueblood in a Sun Bowl rematch. But let’s be honest, they had something like 10-11 starters opt out. It’s a big reason I excluded bowl games from my statistics, just too much of an unknown/unreliable variable.
We didn't have Hoov, Briles, Dwyer or Palmer. Yes, indeed, a fun win without traitor Hoov.

TCU had a 3 year starting Qb opt out. The game is in the books and there are no asterisks for someone looking at the record 20 years from now. It will ALWAYS be a loss for USC.

The OC choice is going to do Dykes in. Unless it turns around in a hurry.

The OL play and lack of run game is what Sammis was brought in to fix. So far it is worse.
They had a Captain's only meeting then a Team meeting with no coaches. After our 1st. conf. game we are having meetings. Some would say Sonny has lost the team and maybe he has. The hiring of Sammis was a big deal for the football program. 4 games in and a train wreck. He was touted to rebuild the offensive line and enhance the run game and bring in a dual threat QB.

Sonny said today via Startlegram..........Dykes said he believes Jaden Craig has played well this season and just needs to be more consistent.
