The Maya are still here. They were conquered and subdued, not exterminated. About 7 million Mayan people still live in Central America and southern Mexico. I met a few hundred of them in Guatemala in 1997.

Oh, and Mayan prophecies never predicted the end of the world -- not for December 2012 or any other time. This was all a bunch of misconstrued hokem by some over-imaginative doomsayers with good press.

The Mayan calendar just ended today which is an end of galactic cycle. We just started a new cycle that takes thousand of years. Because their calendar ended with this last galactic cycle some took at as prediction of the end of the world. It appears that is incorrect interpretation.
