http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMU_Mustangs_football :

"When we were affiliated with those schools in this region [Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech], we were competing very $ucce$$fully," Orsini reminded

SMU's interest in the Big 12 was never reciprocated, and the Big 12 added SMU's rival TCU, which has had far more recent success than SMU, including a Rose Bowl victory.

Team achievements

SMU is the only program to have ever received the "Death Penalty" and is well known for dubious recruiting methods of this era.

SMU screwed up when they dropped baseball and track. They don't have enough sports to attract the Big 12.

A blatant show of lack of overall financial commitment.

SMU screwed up when they gave the MWC the finger. MWC > Big East. Big East has better TV$ and better basketball, but the MWC is just funner.
I wouldn't say the TV numbers are going to be all that different b/w the big east and the MWC.

smu will join the big east b/c of a 70+ year old part timer bball coach. When he retires or moves on, which wil be soon, AND cincy and uconn bail for the ACC, smu will be in a bad position.

If they are not careful, they will be regulated to the sunbelt or div iii very soon.

I still can't believe that there's a legitimate university in the southern part of the United States without a baseball program

SMU, University of North Texas, UTEP, Tulsa. I am sure there are others. That's the first question I ask when conference expansion is brought up.

Right on, and add men's soccer to that list. A legitimate university without a men's soccer team? Can you think of one?

Every university in Texas except SMU? Aren't the Ponies the only scholly men's soccer program?

Every university in the B12? That couldn't be true; surely 1 or 2 of the B12 schools have a non-club men's soccer team.

That bit about adding their rival TCU was my addition. That part towards the end regarding their desire to get in to an auto-bid conference was just so poorly phrased, it read more like a petition than an encyclopedia.

9 members of the Big 12, 12 members of the SEC, 3 members of the ACC, 5 members of the Big Ten, and 6 members of the PAC 12 do not field men's soccer teams. Total: 35.

1 Big 12 and 2 SEC schools field D1 men's soccer teams in non-power leagues. 9 ACC members, 7 Big Ten members, and 6 PAC 12 members field teams in their conference. Total: 25.

Conclusion: schools in power conferences tend not to field men's soccer teams. (But note, the 4 schools scheduled to enter one of the five power conferences (ND, Cuse, Pitt, and Louisille) all currently field men's soccer in the Big East, bringing the tally from 35-25 to 35-29).
