Over the past five years, SMU's football home attendance has seen notable fluctuations, reflecting both challenges and triumphs. Here's a breakdown:

Average Home Attendance (2019–2023)
  • 2023: 22,616
  • 2022: 24,971
  • 2018–2022 Five-Year Average: Approximately 19,811
  • 2024: A Record-Breaking Year

The 2024 season marked a significant upswing. SMU averaged 32,652 fans per game at the 32,000-seat Gerald J. Ford Stadium, surpassing capacity and setting a new attendance record. This 44% increase from 2023 was the largest year-over-year jump in FBS football . The Mustangs sold out all seven home games, fueled by their inaugural ACC season and a surprise run to the College Football Playoff.

Again, this sentiment might have played in 2018. SMU has since surpassed TCU in football. I very much think folks on the TCU side will give a [Finebaum] in September.
I think TCU was cowards for cancelling the series, but tap the brakes on SMU “surpassing” TCU in football.

It was nice year y’all had last year when just about everything went your way. Let’s see how the next 2-3 years go.

SMU has played the portal very well over the last 2 years with their "Miami Connections" after Lashlee coaching in Coral Gables. I doubt that they hit on that many kids in the trenches/skill positions in next 2 years. They lost 6 of the front 7 on defense. Lost most of their OL and skill position players. Something has got to give.

Things I wouldn’t trade with TCU right now:

University leadership
Institutional support
Conference affiliation
Coaching staff
Roster

I hope TCU and SMU can work it out. Things have changed since TCU bailed. It is just stupid that TCU/ SMU don’t play in every sport all the time. We pay these coaches millions and they want to play a bunch of cream puffs to protect themselves.

TCU has played SMU only once in mens buckets since 2018. Women only once since 2019. Explain that, not having a crosstown rival on the soft pre-conference schedule. Students no longer know it is a historic rivalry because TCU has decided to extinguish it - ignore/bury the history and lose the value of what should be a valued rivalry.

TCU canceling SMU may have added vigor and determination to the Mustangs boosters and admin to do what it took to get into the ACC. Well done, TCU, but I don’t think SMU will be thanking you, well, maybe a backhanded thank you, or more like a returned backhanded slap to the face.
