Big 12 Ranked Worst Power 4 Conference in ESPN FPI

Story by Ivan White

The Big 12 could be in trouble next season.

Last season was the first season of the 12-team playoff, and it was somewhat of a success in its first year. However, the new format didn’t exactly help the Big 12 maintain its status as one of the top conferences in the nation.

With additions before the 2024 season effectively turning the SEC and Big Ten into superconferences, the ACC and Big 12 struggled to find a similar level of success. While the ACC still managed to get multiple teams into the playoff, the Big 12 earned only one spot.

Kansas State is the highest ranked team in the Big 12, at #20. SMU is ranked #18.
I would not have put KSU as the highest ranked team of the Big12. Seems odd.

Surprised they didn't mention Texas Tech as they are getting a lot of attention with their transfer portal class being highly ranked.

None of this really matters at the end of the day.

It’s time to swap UCF, Cinn, and WVU for Cal, Stanford, and SMU and change our name to the Southwestern Conference. That way when the SEC makes it’s Atlantic grab, the SWC can make it’s Pacific grab, making the greatest regional conference ever! SWC…SWC…SWC

Nah, send Houston to the ACC, forget SMU, add Washington St and Oregon St. the rest looks good.

Isn't UH pretty good in basketball? Not sure what to make of SMU, but they are obviously doing well in football. Is it sustainable? Who knows.
SMU won't lose their momentum this time due to a payoff scandal. I hate to state the obvious again, but money for players will never be SMU's problem! I read where multiple municipal airports in central Pennsylvania were jammed with private jets full of SMU fans when they played at Penn State in the playoff such that the locals had never seen anything close to it from the other Big 10 schools' rich fans.

As long as the transfer portal is in place, TCU and SMU are great landing spots for players (especially African-American kids) who realize there is nothing there for them in lilly-white Ames, Stillwater, Lubbock, Oxford, Gainesville, Auburn, Fayetteville ad nauseum.
