At the same time, it does make it pretty fun to watch a team like Colorado make a run. And always fun to see teams like the Cubs, Yanks, Sox, Mets lose even when they spend all that money (although they win more times then not).

Agree that baseball should be capped, but I doubt that will be happening anytime soon. Baseball players have the best thing going for them in terms of contracts, union, and protection after baseball.

What you need is a cap and a floor, like the NFL, in order to keep the big market teams from outspending everyone, but also to keep the small market teams from spending the absolute minimum in order maximize profits. If every team has a payroll within a small predetermined window, there is no advantage for anyone and any franchise can win at any time. And if you don't win, you have no one to blame but yourself (poor personnel management or poor coaching).

It's what makes the NFL great... competitive opportunity.
