The leaders of the Big East conference met in Dallas on Friday. With Boise State opting to stay in the Mountain West on Dec. 31, the league faces a new football future that will likely also be missing San Diego State. The Big East is reportedly prepared to move forward with or without the Aztecs, but are all of the remaining Big East schools on board?

Southern Methodist, along with some of the other new additions from Conference USA, have issued statements of their commitment to the league. But one report from Mark Blaudschun suggests that Cincinnati and Connecticut are exploring options that include joining the "Catholic 7" in their new conference. According to Blaudschun, the Bearcats and Huskies would place their football programs in the Mountain West with all other sports in the new conference.

UConn and Cincy playing football in Mountain West is just as funny as BoiseSt. and SDSU playing in the Big East. Unless you're SMU. Or Houston. And the rest. LOLZ.

UConn and Cincy to the MWC makes zero sense. Have we actually gotten to the point where we'll fly a team, coaching staff and support staff, plus equipment, from Connecticut to Hawaii (or vice versa) every year for a college football game? They'd have to leave Friday morning and wouldn't get back until Monday. It's insane.

Funny if true.......

"Multiple sources said Tuesday that the Big East’s initial proposal to ESPN in negotiations for media rights fees was for an astounding $300 million a year—10 times what the league likely will get, and more than any current BCS league receives from its annual media rights deal. More than one BCS source said the Big East was, “laughed out of the room.”[/font]

The entire state of college football is really sad. The playoff format only allows 4 teams. That means smaller schools will be unlikely to gain access to be BCS Busters. SMU, Mountain West, Former WAC, CUSU and any other mid-major will likely be excluded. ESPN is a bully! I hope they get hit with an antitrust or Rico suit. But, that's probably unlikely since they are owned by Disney. I'm so sick of ESPN controlling college football.

Dumbest thing ever. UConn and Cinn are neither in the mountains or in the west!

And since Fort Worth is "where the west begins"...neither is SMU!

Except that so-called Gang Of 5 conferences have been a automatic slot in the BCS bowls going forward....something they didnt have before.

I'm surprised the MWC and SMU won't cut a deal. MWC would probably desire another DFW presence outside a bowl game or two.

Also, the highest-rated champion from the "Group of Five" conferences -- the Big East, Conference USA, Mountain West, Sun Belt and Mid-American -- will receive an automatic berth in one of the six access bowls.

Earlier, ESPN reported the six-bowl rotation would be used, as well as an automatic bid awarded for the "Group of Five" conferences.

There needs to be a Big East / Mountain West merger. They should just be divisions instead of conferences and only overlap for their championship game. That would give them their greatest chance to access the four team playoff moving forward. The have nots need to work together be because their interests are aligned and none of them have any position of strength to work from.
