SB Nation: Gary Patterson dishes on TCU losing the in-state recruiting arms race

i don't believe i am overly sensitive about the tone of the article and don't read it as something that is complimentary about the tcu program.

what i find is an article written with language that is derogatory towards the players signed by tcu and is inaccurate in others.

take this backhanded compliment:

"An impressive feat, to be sure, but far more notable is that he and his staffs have largely done so by digging up diamonds in the rough and not only surviving but thriving on what’s oftentimes the scraps left behind from regional recruiting powers and college football’s blue bloods."

scraps? scraps? andrew coker is scraps? a player texas tried to desperately pull away from tcu and failed before offering the higher rated hookin.....wait, hookfin was higher rated and rate he only got a texas offer after texas couldn't pull coker from tcu......huh

additionally, who are these regional recruiting powers he mentions? if texas and ou are the blue blood programs in the big 12 which regional recruiting powers have recently pulled better classes than tcu?

if you look at the last four classes in the big 12 guess which program has been ranked 3rd behind ou and texas? tcu

then we have this gem:

"This often indescribable reality was evident last cycle as Patterson had to venture north and sign four-star quarterback and Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year, Max Duggan, as the headliner of his 2019 class. Furthermore, not only is an Iowa native the headliner of TCU’s class, but the top-ranked in-state signee, Wichita Falls Hirschi running back Daimarqua Foster, ranked outside of the top 35 in the state."

texas last year signed the #6 dual threat quarterback prospect in the nation out of png. funny thing is that quarterback from iowa was the #5 dual threat quarterback prospect in the nation. so it is a bad thing to go get a better prospect?

the author fails to mention that 14 of the 25 players texas signed were from out of state and 27 of the first 68 players signed in mensa's first three classes were from out of state.

the one point he did miss is that tcu has dropped off in the metroplex the last few years and a legitimate question is how much have the frogs been hurt in recruiting in the metroplex when kenny perry left the program.

It is a fan article. It did raise an interesting question but then neglected to answer it which is: Why doesn't TCU rank as high as UT and A&M and other Big State Us in the recruiting rankings despite being very competitive? If he had considered that question, he might have come up with some things like:

1. Recruiting rankings are skewed towards Big State Us because they are a business that caters to the larger subscriber bases of Big State Us. In other words, the Big State Us will always see their recruits get higher rankings in comparison regardless of actual talent. So this means TCU's actual team recruit rankings will always be a few spots lower than they should be each year.

2. Some recruits simply want to play at larger stadiums and go to big schools. TCU as a small private school does not offer this.

3. The Big State Us have shown a willingness to shall we say provide extra incentives far more often than little ole TCU to get recruits. Naturally, this means TCU will lose out on some recruits now and again.

4. The article mentions that TCU is more willing to coach up or project players. This is less common with the move to the Big12 but still highlights a difference between how the Big State Us recruit and TCU recruits.

5. The article ignores that OU had shifted its recruiting focus to more nationally rather than targeting the State of Texas and they have managed to do quite well. This example alone calls into question the premise that recruiting in the State of Texas is the best method of success. Or to put it another way, why is OU a superior program to UT and A&M if in state recruiting is so important?

We have access to all kinds of recruiting information and money which allows us to recruit nationally...We be idiots to hang out around DFW and HOU and hope for the best. Do we need to do find away to pull better athletes out of our backyard? Absolutely, but we can recruit the whole country and improve. Despite what the rankings say we are getting more physically gifted players then ever..

I think he should have said something like, “TCU learned from the Texas Garret Gilbert type mistake when they also fell for an obviously over ranked recruit when they got Shawn Robinson”
