A last-ditch effort to save the Big 12 appears to have saved Utah's chances of joining the Pac-10.

Once seemingly headed to be locked out of the conference expansion frenzy, the Utes now are thought to be the favored team to be the 12th team to join the conference.

The last spot in the Pac-10's efforts to expand to 16 teams was thought to be between Utah and Kansas of the Big 12. ...

Article sez: Theoretically the Pac-10 could remain as an 11-team league, but indications have been consistent commissioner Larry Scott wanted a 12-team league, the minimum required for a league title game.

Rly? What indications? Thought he wanted a 16-team league with both division winners getting auto bids.

Yep, that's exactly what they wanted. Guess they have scaled back their plans.

I fully expect a Utah invite to them pronto ...

There's a big difference between being the 16th team and the 12th. Being #16 means being the filler, because there's 5 other teams helping to carry the increased load revenue-wise (ie, UT, and OU). Being #12 means Utah would have to pay their own way. They may get an invite, but it isn't a given at this point.
