Wow, didn't notice AD that night. I loaned him some sunscreen at the first UT Super Regional game 3. He was right next to Jerry Hughes.I was with my son and Wes introduced us on the patio. Andy Dalton was right behind you....
Busy eating chocolate pieWhatever happened to The Morose Dr. Moe?
I remember a bunch of us meeting at a cyber-bar out by the Convention Center. I think it was called the Cyber Rodeo? We added a live component to the chat room.
Three memories stick out to me:
Anybody else remember those meetings?
- Meeting Billy Tubbs and staff. I was really impressed with Billy. Of his assistant coaches McClain really stood out as a sharp, articulate guy.
- New AD Hyman came over the night after the MWC was announced. His eyes were so bloodshot he looked like he had just smoked a kilo of pot. Admire him for coming, although he had a real excuse.
- The night Wes unsuccessfully tried to teach Karl Benson, the commissioner of the WAC, how to use the chat room. The chat room was really, really easy to use, but Benson, the head of a Division I-A conference could not get the hang of it. I remember thinking no wonder the MWC was formed...how do we get out of this conference!?
So, that's pretty much a braggin rights moment when you think about it.Karl Benson. That moron. I can remember getting into an email feud with him once back when all the league shuffling started. Not the sharpest tool in the shed. I tried it with Craig Thompson in the mwc and at least he was mart enough to just tell me to off. I was youngish and still thought sophomoric things like that were fun.
I attended a few meetings that were SEC and Sun Belt football officials. Every year Benson would speak followed by Greg Sankey. It didn’t bode well for Benson to even be in the same room.Karl Benson. That moron. I can remember getting into an email feud with him once back when all the league shuffling started. Not the sharpest tool in the shed. I tried it with Craig Thompson in the mwc and at least he was smart enough to just tell me to off. I was youngish and still thought sophomoric things like that were fun.

good for ZebraFeisty! and you rang....
I joined in the mid-90s and it was when the recruiting boards were just taking off and social media was yet to explode. The two main recruiting boards at the time were Rivals and the one owned by UT guy Jason Suchomel, Insiders?
Jason had just tried to buy Killerfrogs and when Wes turned him down flat so Jason created a TCU site on his board and told Wes he was going to bury him. Now 30 years later and still strong!
Hope you don’t mind me going down memory lane here. If you do just stop reading…
Gunner was the primary guy for recruiting information at the time on KFc and we chatted a bunch and got to be friends, miss that guy. I started organizing the recruiting info and Wes asked me to expand things. He had friends in the AD offices, I had a few HS coaches’ connections, Dave Smoak helped with East Texas information and a few of the KFc admins who were still in school had connections with players. They fed me a lot of information, and we increased membership rapidly. We also had a lot of fun, and my role was to increase interactions, some methods didn’t go over too well, but a lot did.
One person that was attracted to the board from all this was Dan Jenkins. At the time Dan and Gary Patterson were neighbors and he would feed us some of the goings on. Gary swore we had someone on the inside at one time and was dead set on shutting it down. I did a “find the mole” skit on the board, I ended it with Gary being the mole.
One of the bigger stories Dan put us on was the Arkansas debacle. He first told us when Gary was having dinner with the Arkansas AD in Fort Worth. Then he let us know whenever they showed up at his house and finally told us a deal was done. Wes was able to verify with his connections in the AD office and was told Gary told the coaches to “pack up, we are heading to Arkansas.” What saved it was Jerry Jones asked to let him try one more time with Bobby Petrino, who then was with the Falcons and their first choice. Jerry pulled it off at the last minute before any contracts were signed. Not many believed what we were saying but it was all truth.
Another short Dan story: he posted as Purple Geezer and after another bad showing by some refs at a TCU game he posted on the board his feelings and ended it with “I hope they all die of cancer.” Obviously, Zebra took justifiable exception. I asked Zebra if he knew who Purple Geezer was and said he didn’t. Not sure Dan posted again after that, think he didn’t quite understand the concept. Anyway, Wes was kind enough to buy his TCU book for me and have him sign it. RIP Dan.
The battle of the recruiting boards accelerated after that, and because we were persona non grata for our failure to always show the bright side the other boards gained an advantage (damn suck ups). Anyway, one story we hit them on was on a highly ranked OL recruit from Dallas Skyline who was committed to TCU. He started taking visits to Arizona and word came from the Skyline coaches he was having second thoughts. I posted such and said he was seriously considering Arizona though TCU was still on top. One of the guys on the other board came at us/me hard saying he was close friends with the family, blah, blah blah and I was full of it. A lot of posters joined in including Mr TCU. The next day he decommitted and not a word was said. Good news, bad news was he eventually signed with TCU and did nothing. That is recruiting 101.
So many other great memories. White Sox!!!! (I got banned by Deep for re-arranging the order of posts).
When Scott was in the process of purchasing his share, I received a call from LMac44 (Wes gave him my number) and there were ownership issues to resolve. We chatted and finally set up a lunch with Wes and Scott. Scott and I often butted heads so, was a little nervous about the meeting. Scott was his usually big personality and very friendly. Funny, he would often ban me and then I would see him at an event, and he would be as friendly as ever. That changed near the end, but that is another story,
End pt1 (probably should stop here but if interested in more let me know. Also should the Feisty come back in a much milder persona or let him die?)
Baylor Dan is still around. I see him at every home football game.Something about a cap, and maybe living out of a shopping cart? I can’t remember for sure.
Earl from Mesquite was definitely the guy that sold grinderings.
Remember Baylor Dan? He rankled a lot of people. But it wasn’t Wes. He told me once, and he may still be around, but I’m not sure.
Last seen today at 9:25 am.I retired in the mid-1990's just as computers were really blossoming, used that company that had black and white spotted cows as their id, "you've got mail" was emerging, and lo, there was a way to keep up with Frog stuff. I've changed names a time or two because of computer failure, but as a 94-year-old TCU class of 1951 product, thank the Lord for Killer'frogs. Now if I can just make it 33 more days!
@Limp Lizard look what you've gone and done. You've awakened Steel from some cave in Tibet.Ah the good old days.
Yes, nobody knew (and maybe until now, still don't know) that Wes was a major pot stirrer. Often times poking fun at his friends using his many aliases. Steel never had an alias but Wes had about 10. That's prolly the reason Steel became friends with Wes cause Steel was a more than willing accomplice in such shenanigans. Except Steel at times went too far which, for Wes, was far indeed. The whole Praise Cheesus thing was a Wes invention and a dig at Scotty and his religiosity. And the compromising pics of Scott that Steel would post were supplied...by Wes!
Scotts trans daughter was like manna from heaven for Wes and he never tired of tweaking Scotty about it but not directly.
Wes at one time was quite religious himself, or at least as religious as most people, if not to the level of Scott. When his son died at age 26 and Wes had to pull the plug and everybody told Wes it was part of God's plan, well, that was the end of Wes being religious. What a fiasco to have that phony Todd Wagner speak at Scott's memorial service.
Before Steel and Wes became friends, Steel was running amok and Scott called a phone meeting of people to try and spitball how to deal with Steel; Steel got the number and had fun listening to how frustrated they were. Fun times.
Funniest thing was watching 380 pound Scotty get out of his Prius. And driving in it with Wes - that's about 850 pounds of human in a Prius! And Scotty's pink Hummer - I guess he loved his trans daughter after all...
