Rewatching the UT game

Back to watching the game again. Catalon's long run....My one big thought was "B J, tuck your damn shirttail in!" He made a great cutback late in his long run, and the Texas player just stuck out an arm and grabbed his shirttail and pulled him down. It's a lot harder to shake off a Div-I player who grabs just your shirt than a high school player. That very well could have been a long TD run for BJ with a tucked in shirt. Brown was downfield ready to block the last defender (but since BJ was pulled down by his shirt, Brown almost had a block-in-the-back!)

So right! I agree with Jake102 on another thread too! Verret was about to pick 6 but they got lucky and threw the ball to the ground!

A fun play to watch is that the 12:30 mark in the 4th quarter... UT has the ball and it's 2nd and 9, Verrett is lined up against Mike Davis. Davis makes a short little hook route and Ash goes to throw it and pulls the string on the throw midway through his motion and basically just dumps it into the ground a few yards in front of Davis and a charging Verrett. The announcers: "good thing he pulled the string on that or it was going for six for TCU"

If something were to happen to both Boykin and Brown in the OU game, we would bring in Dominic Merka, Sam Carter, or one of the scout team guys before we burned Tyler Matthews' red shirt.

Sure we want to beat OU, but not that bad. It's not like we're fighting for a BCS game, we're fighting for 8 wins instead of 7, not a big deal. Not to mention, if we're at a point where we have to go to Tyler Matthews, the chances of us winning that game are terrible anyway.

And having Tyler Matthews next year will be huge. You need a 3rd string QB, and if Pachall doesn't make it back, you certainly need a backup QB.

The Texas game is one of the most enjoyable games to rewatch because the Frogs played great from beginning to end. Three points about the pasing game:

1) A few weeks ago, some posters were complaining that TCU passed too much and didn't run enough, now I'm reading the opposite. As some stated above, Boykin dropped back for about a half-dozen more passes but scrambled out. I thought the offense was surprisingly balanced, considering Boykin may have been less than 100 percent. Texas sure had a tough time figuring the Frogs out.

2) Josh Boyce's consecutive-game reception streak was snapped but he still made an impact. He had a beautiful kick return and some huge downfield blocks -- particularly on Catalon's and Tucker's biggest runs of the night. I am going to miss that guy.

3) If Boykin is healthy, I expect the Frogs to pass A LOT against OU. After watching tape of the Texas game, I really think the Sooners won't know what to expect. A full package of pass plays may be the key to beating OU -- and beat them TCU will!

Go Frogs!

I wouldn't mind seeing Merka if there is a need for passing! I hate to admit I believe like gunner! Taller is better after seeing some passes deflected this year! Shh! Don't tell him!
Pachall had a lot of deflected passes, too. So since 6-5 isn't tall enough, how tall does the player need to be? Actually if a 6-4 rusher is less than 10 feet away from the QB, jumps and puts up his hands (which has happened a lot this year), you would need a QB about, what, 9 feet tall?

Rewatching this game it is clear that Boykin was our MVP.

He converted multiple key 3rd downs with his running ability whether called run or scramble.

It appears he is getting much better at flipping the switch from QB to RB and getting down the field quickly as opposed to dancing around and moving horizontally. It has taken him a while to learn that he is not going to juke multiple BIG 12 defenders very often.

another thing we need to work on is timing our leaps over the pile. All season we have seemed to jump waayyyyyyy to early landing on the pile instead of over it. Just sayin'

About one a game. Maybe Boykin has had more. Where the DL are has more to do with it than 3 inches height.

I'll have to go back and watch, but I'm going to bet that he's had fewer than 17 batted down passes. I'd guess closer to 10. And it's not just the passes that get batted down, but also having to change the release and trajectory of passes leading to accuracy issues. See Boykin's INT against UT.

I'm saying that with no knowledge of Matthews. I've heard conflicting reports on him at this point... some say he's great, others say he's not close.

He is a true freshmen. That is to be expected. CP as rsf behind Dalton was spotty at best but had potential. Same thing with TB and TM, they should blossom over time.

Boykin has done a great job behind an injured and inexperienced line as rsf QB that was thrown into the fire by game 5 of the season.

I was talking about this year. I noticed from the beginning he was getting batted passes because his protection was not as good as last year. Like I said a 6-4 guy close to you with his hands up and you have to be lucky for the DL not to touch the ball, no matter your height. 6-2 QB hits the DL's wrist, 6-5 QB hits his palm. Same result.

Doug Flutie, all 5-10 of him (if that) was a pocket passer who rarely had passes blocked. But he was a very, very special talent. Huge arm and accurate for a little guy. Yeah, he may have been even better if he were 6-5. If he were 6-5, kept his speed and agility and intangibles he would have a great pro QB, too. But we're talking college football here.

Agreed. Completely. If we get down to being past even M. Brown, we're not winning the game, anyway, so burning Matthew's redshirt would be pointless (I would go so far as to say that if Boykin goes down with plenty of time in the game, we're not winning, but whatever...).
