Rewatching the UT game

Anyone wonder if the run heavy offense we ran had anything to do with Boykin getting hurt the week before, maybe his arm was a bit sore still? He only threw one deep pass, and that was his first of the game to Fuller. I know we were running it fine for most of the night so there wasn't an emphasis on throwing it deep, but still.

I highly doubt Boykin was 100% for the UT game. I'm sure we planned on running it against their terrible rush defense anyway, but my guess is that we would've passed a little more had he been healthy.

Patterson said that Boykin likely would not have been able to go if the game was the Saturday after the K-St game, and I doubt he went from not being able to play at all to being 100% in a matter of 4-5 days

A few things:

1) Gary was pretty confident that we could shutdown UT's offense
2) Our passing game is horrible... we are sliding further and further backwards in that department. We threw an INT on a gimme pass to start the 2nd half for starters. If not for a few diving catches for 2 yard gains, it would have been a 4-9 type of game.

3) We have to find some type of passing game to beat OU. Landry Jones has plenty of ups and downs, but the ups far outweigh the downs. He is about 4x the QB Ash is, and can throw the ball about 4x further than McCoy.

He probably was not 100%, but that last long pass to LaDarius Brown was huge. It made the DBs respect the pass and keep from stuffing the run.

The run heavy offense had to do with the fact that UT's run defense is one of the worst in the country. Coming into Thursday's game they were ranked 100th. Including Thursday's game they're allowing 201 rushing yards per game.

Their weakness played perfectly into our strength.

I think he was playing conservative and managing possible turnovers w/ a passing game.

IF we were down, maybe he changes the game plan but no need to do that, maybe the last series when they caught up.

All i know is the game plan for OU has to be different on offense, we need to find a passing game.

I think there were some more pass plays called, but they turned into quarterback runs because Texas was bringing a lot of pressure. They have been telling Boykin to run more if he doesn't see someone open right away, and that's what he did.

You have to give our defense a lot of credit for making their offense look terrible. It's amazing how an offense (and QB) can look great against a mediocre defense (UT's offense vs Iowa St) and then suddenly look terrible against an elite defense.

UT's offense had been banging on all cylinders prior to the TCU game. We rattled Ash, he was out of his comfort zone, we made them look bad.

I hope we figure something out on offense, we have a lot of talent especially with wide receivers, lets use them! New running backs seem to be stepping up.

I remember the broadcasters say that the Texas d-line doesn't react or try to anticipate zone read plays and what not. They just charge full force for better/worse and if they miss, hope that their linebackers and safeties clean up.

I think that along with having success running it those first two series, and thankfully getting ahead early, pretty much went into "If it ain't broke don't fix it" mode.

No, I'm not going to want Boykin to throw 60 times a game in order for us to win, but I'm not going to say the passing offense bites rear end either. 7/9 is a good percentage and the only one he really threw bad was the one picked.

I'm not sure if he was injured throwing or not, could have also played in effect, but we had success the first few times, keep doing it.

And, as mentioned above, a few pass plays turned into running plays due to UT's aggressiveness, thankfully which Boykin also exploited in most of his scrambles when they were necessary.

No doubt. I'd take our defense up against just about anyone.

There's not a single guy playing poorly right now on the defense. Maponga and Fields are possibly the best 1-2 DE combo in the nation. Now that they have to choose between loading up against Fields or Maponga you are seeing both guys wreck shop... Pierson, Hunter and Lewis are absolute rocks inside, they are beating the crap out of OLines right now. Cain is doing his job with efficiency, Mallett is making plays and gutting the run. White is playing better and is really starting to have some good moments, Verrett is a ball hawk, very possibly the best CB in the nation. Hackett has improved greatly the past couple weeks, and you rarely see a big play come against him. Sam Carter is a monster... can play the run or pass (his forced fumble on JGray was awesome... JGray recovered, but it was an amazing strip) and Olabode is becoming an absolute terror (4 INTs on the year including a clutch play against UT).

These guys will be our best defense we've ever had next year. I think considering the level of competition, they are close now.

No doubt, just trying to be realistic when setting expectations going forward. To look at 7/9 and say it was a very efficient, productive passing game is to look beyond the reality that it was the opposite.

Boykin will be a much more developed passer next season, and by the time he's a junior, it'll be a night and day difference.

That pass to Carter gets intercepted more often than not. We were very fortunate on that play... it hung in the air forever.
