Saban said Sunday that is isn't fair that the fifth-ranked Gators likely will play in the Sugar Bowl over the loser of the Southeastern Conference title game. No. 2 Alabama plays No. 3 Georgia for the SEC title Saturday, with the winner advancing to the BCS title game in Miami and the loser probably landing in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando. "It's not really a great scenario," Saban said. ''You play your way into the (SEC) championship game, which means you're the best team in your division. ... It doesn't seem quite right, but it is what it is. I don't really know what me commenting about it is going to do to change it. But I don't feel good about it.''

I seem to recall a team not winning it's Division making a BCS Championship Game just last year over several conference champions. Really, Nich Saban, you don't than it's fair? I bet Mike Gundy agrees with you, I mean really. Don't you realize that this is exactly how you gamed the system last year? Saban, you are a hypocrit. Really.

The best team should always go, regardless of conference championship. 'Bama was the best team last year and went to the NC game, Georgia is better than Florida this year and should go to the Sugar Bowl.

Thank you for seeing what I was referring to. Sure, UGA beat UF, though I would argue UF's resume is much more impressive, notwithstanding the loss. The point is that Saban was referring to the fact that if his team loses to UGA, Florida will go to a BCS bowl and Bama will not.

It's a different scenario. The point he is making here is that a team which picks up an extra loss by virtue of winning its way into a championship game and having to face another top-ranked outfit should not be punished as against another team that did not earn the chance to get that extra loss. The same thing happened to Mizzou as against KU in 2007, and Sparty as against Michigan last year. In so far as it goes it is a valid point. However, it just so happens that this year Florida has beaten a lot better teams than the Dawgs, regardless of their head-to-head loss. They do deserve the Sugar Bowl bid.

If I recall correctly, by the time Georgia lost to LSU last year they had three losses and weren't even in the MNC discussion. In that situation you weren't comparing Bama to a team that did play their way in to the CCG but to a bunch of other one-loss squads in different leagues. That said, all Saban is doing is preemptively lobbying for his team to go to New Orleans if they lose. And he certainly is a slime ball.

Not the same. Last year, Alabama didn't go to the championship game over the team that won their division. They just beat them in it. He's saying that if Georgia loses, Florida shouldn't get chosen over them since Georgia beat them. Losing the conference championship shouldn't drop Georgia under a team they beat to get there.

Last year, Alabama benefited by not having to play an extra game. Meanwhile, LSU had to play an extra game. If LSU had lost the SEC championship game, you think Saban would have bowed out so they could still go to the BCS championship game? It is the exact same argument.

I have exactly the opposite opinion. ONLY conference champions should be considered for the national championship and the major bowls for that matter. As a whole, the SEC dumbs down their regular season schedule to boost the number of rated teams thereby maximizing higher national ratings . Other conferences are following suit. This substantially cheapens the regular season and cheats the college football fan out of interesting out of conference match ups during the season.

Champions are chosen on the field. "Best teams" are a product of polls. I'd rather see a team earn it's spot in the playoffs vs a mandate from some poll of so called experts.

I don't think it's fair that Bama & Georgia are in the SEC title game instead of Aggie & Florida as a result of Bama & Georgia drawing cross divisional cupcakes.

Hell, based on last years philosophy that conference championships mean nothing it should be Florida getting the chance to play ND in the BS MNC game.

True, I'm wrong.

It'll be interesting to see how the XII goes about conference expansion. On one side, it's great not having a championship game to screw everything up like this, but then again, we have the deepest conference of all time this year with 90% bowl eligible teams, and won't get too much credit for it. A lot will be riding on how important a championship game will be in terms of reaching the 4-team playoff.
