If he leaves, lets lure his protege, Ray Lewis, to come be our new LBers coach. He'll surely teach them to be stone-cold killers*.

I'm surprised its taken this long for him to be mentioned. Hopefully he stays. He did wonders with our LB's this year.

Not worried. Article is dumb, doesn't cite a single source. And the FSU board doesn't think it's likely either.

It'd be nice for him to have one more year to work with Dawson/Hilliard/Mallett, and great to get Gildon a year with him as well.

Shannon is a great Defensive coach but I'm one for saying he doesn't make the trip! He spent time looking at schools and pros before settling at TCU. He has a plan and I think he stays at TCU for two more years to learn our defensive schemes! By then Bumpas may be ready to retire. Remember CGP loves this guy and pay may be on the way to keep him. IMO repeat IMO

Possibly Randy sent some feelers out while recruiting in Florida or FSU just noticed his presence there.?. if he had fallen under the radar.

Depending on how GP feels about him... he could possibly insert Randy as the new D coordinator or even as the new assistanc coach.... as neither Bumpas nor Willwamson(in their 60s) are potential head coaching material. One may move over, if could come to $ome agreement. But would want at least a 3 year contract with him before moving other senior people around, like that.

Cheers !

I have a hard time seeing Coach P ask Bumpas to step down before he's ready to retire. Now, offering up some sort of co-defensive coordinator position, much like our offense does with OC, on the other hand...

Did mention "$ome agreement". And yes, Bumpas has never been more than assistant D coordinator in the 1st place. Only D coordinator in Title. Again, $ome deal, but Bumpas has really been given a great situation by the Goose who's laid the Golden Egg. Bumpas $hould be grateful for the last 9 years and move over at 63 and counting. But only if Shannon signs a 3 year minimum.

Realize, FSU type DC offers and a TCU CO-DC offer, isn't apple$ for apple$.

Cheers !

Move over? That's pretty ridiculous to ask someone who's done a great job to move over bc a younger guy is here. That's what gets greedy people in trouble. If it ain't broke...

how about co-defensive coordinator? Or maybe Assistant Head Coach/Defense! titles are easy to manipulate. CGP would never ask Bumpas to step anywhere but up. He has a staff in place to take us to a title the next few years so why screw that up. IMO It's a pay thing now.

It's a bit easier to be considered successful at the DC position when someone else is calling the plays. And sometimes, the 'younger guy' thing can be in the best interest of the program, and sometimes it's best for the ol' sailor to move on. Ask UT fans what they think about this... Mack has done at least one good thing for the program (Vince Young who = National Championship for them). But if you ask any Horn, they'd almost unanimously want Muschamp calling the shots now.[/background]

[font=Helvetica Neue'][background=rgb(255, 255, 255)]*EDIT* - I mean no discredit towards Bumpas whatsoever with this comment. He's done a great job working for Coach P, and look at what he's done with our DL since he's been around. Just stating that IT'S POSSIBLE that the 'younger guy' concept is sometimes in the best interest for the program, and if I had to chose between the two, it wouldn't be too hard of a choice for me.[/background][/font]

From what little I have read/heard Bumpas is staying at TCU in his present job or better until he decides to retire. He'll leave on his terms.

There doesn't seem any source to this rumor. Do yall really think he would leave after one year?

Yes. I think it has a lot to do with what RS wants out of the DC position. If he is ok with not calling plays, and still maintaining more of a position coach roll but with more influence over the defense, then TCU is a good spot for him until he gets offered a head coaching gig.

But this guy was a DC calling plays for some damn good defenses in Miami, and a head coach before, so I have a hard time seeing him stick around for too long without getting some influence on defensive playcalling.

I'm surprised his name hasn't come up as HC at Florida International. BUT, the school is in Miami, and this might have something to do with it.

Yes "sometimes" it maybe better for the older coach to step aside, but when your D ranks in the top 20 in the country playing in the strongest offensive conference with only 1 senior in the two-deep, that doesn't seem like that "sometime." Especially since the D coordinator that you have now has no desire to be a head coach and the younger guy that you are promoting probably has aspirations of getting back to the top spot.

Lack of motivation for personal/career advancement can be a terrible thing and really hinder someone's performance.

Also, due to the nature of the "Defensive Coordinator" position here, I attribute the majority of our defensive success to Coach P. Yes, it takes a village, and our coordinators do play a roll in the success of the team, but Patterson ultimately is the one putting the defensive gameplan together, calling the game, etc.

All that said, I absolutely see where you are coming from, and I want to emphasize that I do not mean to, in any way, belittle Coach 'Stache at all. Just sharing a different side of the discussion.
