Punt Returns

Seriously...........we'd be better off if we never had anyone returning punts. Just let the ball land where it may.

A SAD state of affairs for a program that has been blessed with a very strong punt return game for a decade now.

It was a tough punt to field. Blowing it is O.K./human I think, but I fault the punt returner's try to pick up the ball and run with it when it's on the turf at the 4 yard line.

Fall on it, wrap it up, don't try to be a hero. Fundamental ball playing.

If he had, it'd been 1st and 10 on the 4 for TCU. This MSU O was weak and I don;t believe they'd scored another TD with out this punt returner error, It never would have been 14-13. It would have been TCU's game.

Don't make excuses for Dawson. His only job is to catch the ball (including passes). He has been "returning" punts for two years and has probably caught literally thousands of punts and kickoffs in practice. If he can't catch a punt that is tough to field - and I agree that he can't - he shouldn't have been the punt returner.

Many Frog fans wanted him canned last year. And again this year, more than once. I honestly can't explain Patterson's unwillingness to bench him in favor of Boyce or Carter or someone else (except for that freshman who caught a few and also fumbled).

He shouldn't even have tried to catch it. Those guys are coached CONSTANTLY to stand at the 10 yard line and NOT catch anything over their heads. Can't believe a senior could make such a huge mistake. Just get out of the damn way.

Mentioned this in another topic, but I watched the MSU punt returner. He always put himself right under the ball for a very secure catch. Never had to reach or dive, etc... Dawson - over the season - frequently had very risky catches, so it would seem that he had difficulty judging how to adjust himself properly to where the ball was going to arrive.

he made that same mistake all year in several games
he just makes bad decisions on when to field a punt

I really find it hard to believe that in a good college football program he was the best option for fielding punts.

I think Dawson's depth perception was all screwed up. Either that or he was looking at the coverage when he should have been watching the ball and he'd try to make adjustments at the last second. But I'm thinking depth perception...

Yep, these are my observations as well.

Those blaming sharp are out of line. Dawson was a late signee that Patterson brought in, a flyer on a track star that no one else thought was a d1 football player except for Patterson. Since then,Dawson has always been one of pattersons favorites and he has never stopped giving Dawson chances until the bitter end.

Dawson is not a football player. He doesn't like to take a hit. His slips and falls are all just a way to protect himself. The ultimate practice player that is a star when he doesnt have to take a hit. On the ensuing kick off, Skye had a nice 30 yard burst. Watch the replay, I'm fairly sure not one msu player got a hand on him. He just went down in a heap in traffic so he wouldn't take a hit.
