SPRING FOOTBALL EXTRA
Taking a look around the MWC
Darnell Dickson - Daily Herald
Here's a quick look at spring football around the Mountain West Conference.
Air Force
The USAFA Endowment has announced the largest gift from a graduate to the Academy in the institution's history. Bart Holaday, Class of '65, and his wife, Lynn, have recently committed $5 million toward the construction of a new indoor athletic training facility.
The indoor training facility is slated for completion by early 2011. The 92,000 square-foot center will house a regulation-sized field that can accommodate football, lacrosse, and soccer, in addition to many other athletic activities. Air Force is one of only three MWC institutions currently without an indoor practice facility.
Colorado State
Colorado State used four quarterbacks in Tuesday's 15-play live scrimmage. Redshirt freshman Nico Ranieri led the first team and true freshman Pete Thomas took the second team. Redshirt freshman M.J. McPeek and senior Jon Eastman also saw limited team snaps. T.J. Borcky did not wear the quarterback's black jersey but practiced most of the day at the receiver position.
Freshman running back Chris Nwoke broke loose on a 70-yard touchdown run in the scrimmage. He also had a 23-yard run and finished with 102 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Cornerback Momo Thomas had an interception to lead the defense.
New Mexico
"When they have the black (no-hit) jerseys, there's a lot of assumptions - whether it's a sack or how they're going to respond to hanging in that pocket, We put them in some tough situations (Saturday) with the live jerseys. For 120 plays, those guys did a pretty good job of managing the offense." - New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley in the Albuquerque Journal about his decision to make his quarterbacks "live" during a scrimmage.
San Diego State
Senior place-kicker Bryan Shields hit a 49-yard field goal with 6:37 left in the second quarter to lift the Black squad to a 10-7 victory Saturday (March 20) in the San Diego State football team's annual Red & Black Game.
The Black team's touchdown was a 74-yard pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Bernards to senior wide receiver Vincent Brown. The Red team's tying scoring came on a 7-yard run by freshman running back Ronnie Hillman.
Junior Ryan Lindley, the returning starter at quarterback, finished the day 9 of 25 for 128 yards.
TCU
"We're trying to be more vocal. Not necessarily individually, but as a unit and as seniors. We have quite a few seniors this year, so along with [linebacker] Tank [Carder], we're trying to motivate each other as a group." - TCU senior defensive tackle Cory Grant in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on replacing the leadership of All-American Jerry Hughes. The two leading candidates to play Hughes' defensive end position are redshirt freshman Stansly Moponga and junior Braylon Broughton.
UNLV
In a two-hour scrimmage, sophomore wide receivers Trey Mays and senior Michael Johnson each caught a pair of scoring passes, part of a five-touchdown effort through the air by Rebel quarterbacks, which also featured no interceptions. Junior Mike Clausen and freshman Caleb Herring each threw two of the scores, while senior Omar Clayton had one.
Defensive lineman James Dunlap registered a pair of quarterback sacks. The defense also forced and recovered two fumbles.
Utah
Starting quarterback Jordan Wynn completed 12-of-20 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns (2 TDs came during red zone drills) in a recent scrimmage.
Griffin McNabb has moved up to No. 1 at `Z' receiver, joining Jereme Brooks (`H') and Luke Matthews (`X') in the starting lineup ... Moving into the two deep at linebacker is sophomore Boo Anderson, the former Mr. Football award winner from Alta High School.
Wyoming
The offense won the first of three spring scrimmages, 57-49. The scrimmage included 99 plays over a one and one-half hour period in Wyoming's Indoor Practice Facility.
The No. 1 offense was led by sophomore quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, who completed 13 of 17 pass attempts (76.5 percent) for 209 yards and no interceptions. Carta-Samuels also led UW in rushing with 80 yards, one rushing touchdown of 12 yards and a total of 289 yards in total offense. Sophomore running back Alvester Alexander carried 14 times for 59 yards and three rushing touchdowns.
The No. 1 defense was led by junior middle linebacker Brian Hendricks, who intercepted a pass and returned it 64 yards for a touchdown. Hendricks added five tackles, including 1.0 tackle for a loss.
