Today's Profile: Jerry Hughes

Position: Outside Linebacker/Defensive End

College: TCU

Height: 6-foot-2

Weight: 255 pounds

Combine Numbers: Hughes clocked a 4.56 in the 40-yard dash and a 6.99 in the three-cone drill. In addition, he recorded a 34.5 in the vertical jump, 9-feet-10-inches in the broad jump and 26 reps in the 225-pound bench press.

Senior Year: He ranked fifth on the team with a career-high 58 tackles and led the team with 11.5 sacks for minus 72 yards, leading the Mountain West Conference and placing ninth in the nation in that category. He also led the team with 16.5 stops for losses of 78 yards, the third-best total in the conference.

Honors: Hughes is a two-time All-American (2008, 2009) and a two-time first-team All-Mountain West Conference (2008-09) pick. In 2009 he received the Ted Hendricks Award, given annually to college football's top defensive end; and the Lott Trophy, given annually to a defensive player who demonstrates outstanding athletic achievement and personal character.

Could he be a Patriot? Hughes could be the pass-rusher that the Patriots are looking for. Most scouts believe that Hughes, who played defensive end in college, could excel as an outside linebacker in New England's 3-4 defense. He is projected to go anywhere from late in the first round to the middle of the second round, with the Patriots hoping for the latter. He is a versatile and quick defender with exceptional tacking skills and good closing speed. He also has a strong work ethic, but is a bit undersized for the type of linebacker that the Patriots like.

Hughes started 27 to for 49 games at Texas Christian, including his final 26 contests. He made 142 tackles in his career (82 solo) with 28.5 sacks (tied for fifth among nation's active players) for minus-207 yards, and 40.5 stops for losses totaling 230 yards. He caused eight fumbles, recovered four more, and gained 32 yards and a touchdown on three interception returns.
