Please hire Sonny Dykes

SD knows all the TCU coaches so it won't take him long to evaluate them.

He may have a different scheme in mind on defense. Anything else would be an improvement.

Guessing you have never looked at Dykes’ team defensive records

His teams make Wake look solid on D

Let’s hope his plan is to hire a really good DC and just walk away from that side of the ball

Correct, he's like the other offensive gurus, he probably views defense as the uncomplicated art of chasing people. That's why his DC hire is so important.

Briles didn't have good teams until he hired an adequate DC. And Phil Bennett was just that, adequate. With a good DC, SD could be something special.

Some numbers for the uninformed:

1. 71-62 career record over 12 years

2. 1 conference championship in 12 years, and that was in the WAC 10 years ago.

3. 5-22 against the top 25 overall, 3-7 at SMU with all 3 teams finishing the season unranked, two were ranked #25 when he beat them.

4. 1-3 in bowl games

5. Team defensive ranking (130 total teams)-

La Tech - 2010 - 89
La Tech - 2011 - 24
La Tech - 2012 - 110

Cal - 2013 - 99
Cal - 2014 - 105
Cal - 2015 - 79
Cal - 2016 - 115

SMU - 2018 - 63
SMU - 2019 - 65
SMU - 2020 - 81
SMU - 2020 - 74

The Cal stint on defense was historically bad, fielding one of the worst defenses during his tenure in the history of the program:

5. La Tech, over 3 years, 22-15 overall, 14-7 in conference,
Finished 5th, 1st, and 3rd in conference

At Cal, his only P5 experience, over 4 years, 19-39 overall, 10-26 in conference, Fired from Cal
Finished 6th, 4th, 4th, 4th (out of 6 schools in his division)

At SMU, 30-17 overall, 18-12 in conference
Finished 4th, 3rd, 5th, and could end up anywhere from 4th to 6th this season. Best finishes will be 3rd overall, with an average finish of 4th in the conference (11 schools)

6. Of SMU's 8 wins in 2021, not one has come against a D1 program with a wining record. He has lost his last 3 out of 4 games, beat La Tech on a hail Mary, and squeaked by Navy

7. Overall, at SMU, He's 2-7 on the road in the second half of the season, and those 2 wins came against teams that were a combined 5-14. One was a 3 point win and the other was a 10-point comeback against a one win team.

8. In November at SMU, overall he is 5-11

9. He has an overall losing record against teams that are .500 or better over his career.

10. Does not have one signature win tied to his name over 12 years.

11. Was named coach of the year once in the WAC (2011)
Yikes. If these numbers are correct, that just makes this all the more meh.

Sonny Dykes is the penultimate football coach we've all been waiting for our entire lives.
He is so good, I fully expect TCU to go 15-0 next season, including winning the spring scrimmage.
Of course, Ohio State with two losses will edge an undefeated TCU for the final playoff spot.

You two should start a forum where the whole point is to just post the same thought over and over again and then you can like each other’s posts. You’ll feel great about yourselves every morning when you’re sitting on the toilet smiling at the like counts.
For some reason l read that last phrase as “smiling like counts” and I wondered if that sector of the nobility are especially pleased with themselves

To sum that up: his defenses are lousy and his wins are against the bottom feeders and middling teams.
I would add, the coaches immediately before and after his tenure at Cal have better defensive rankings and winning percentages than Dykes. So the excuse of "Its hard to win at Cal" isn't much of an argument to support Dykes record there.

Tedford was 32-31 and 20-25 in the PAC in his last five years at Cal, and he’s got the best record of any Cal coach in 60 years. What was Wilcox’s record? What about some of the other coaches there, what are their records?

Not hard to win there? Really? SMFH.

Their current coach couldn’t beat this year’s TCU team.

To be fair, I just looked it up and Dykes had the 2nd worst tenure at Cal since 1987. Maybe he simply was as some have proposed just a mismatch for the program/school/region, but omitting the failure he had there while omitting the career of success for GP is a bit one sided in the evaluation process. Dykes sucked at Cal…the reason is debatable, but the record isn’t and others certainly did better before and after as was pointed out.

I just looked it up and Dykes has by far the best record of any SMU coach since 1984.

What does the career success of GP have to do with anything? He isn’t being evaluated.

June Jones : 3 -1 in Bowl Games, 2 1st-Place finishes
Dykes: 0 Bowl wins, 0 1st place finishes.

Plus we can always just go back to what has already been posted by others.
At SMU he has a poor record vs. winning teams and an even worse record vs. top 25 teams.
At each of Dykes stops, his defenses have sucked.

to be fair, Dykes could make a solid hire for his DC and that would really help things.
