Plays Under Review

I have waited a few days to ask this in order to try and avoid being mistaken as an officiating complaint. Instead I am making the "when it rains it pours" argument.

In retrospect of all of the reviewed calls in TCU games this season, didn't they seem to go against our favor in an inordinate amount.

It got to a point in the last few games that I assumed any reviewed play would go against us.

Anybody have some real numbers to validate or debunk my theory?

it didn't seem like that to me. but if you are right, then that means that sometimes the original call was in our favor, then the correct call was made. the fumble against OU is a good example.

i think it would be worse to have every reviewed call go in your favor because that means that some original calls were incorrectly against you.

My impression was mostly that they got calls correct. There were a couple that I thought they blew, but I thought it was overall pretty fair. The OU Boykin pass/fumble call I thought could have gone either way. I expected that one to be upheld since it was not very convincing the other way.
There were several calls that I think they blew that never got reviewed. I am still convinced that the field goal was good against OU. We all know Cain intercepted that ball off of the receivers foot. The Fields personal foul call for the late hit when he was going for the fumble. The Maponga offsides call that conveniently gave OU a much more manageable 4th down. The missed holding call X 2 on the long OU run. I'm sure there were more.

One that sticks out as going for us would be Tucker's first TD against Texas.
True. They definitely got that one right, despite our offense trying to run the "hurry up and get the play off so they won't review it" offense. Never did figure that out.

I'm not saying right versus wrong, only that the final decision whether overturned or upheld was seemingly on the side of the opposition.

I can think of three that were for us:
Ut TD, wv 2pt conversion, and 16's fumble for Baylor.

But ISu, tech, OU etc the "bounces" we're not in our favor and thusly the reviewed calls weren't in our favor.

Am I nuts?

No, you're not nuts. There have definitely been some that didn't go our way. Not sure the oficial count though.

Funny thing about that play was that TCU was trying like heck to get the ball snapped when the officials stopped the play to review the TD. If we'd had it our way we would have never got that call.

If I recall correctly the ball got slapped out of his hand when he reached across the line so I think they were more worried about getting a fumble called and losing the possession than they were whether he got over the line.

Without going through each game again, I can't say if the reviewed calls went more heavily against us or not. Of course, the OU game sticks out in my mind, as it's the most recent and I think overturning that call to give OU a fumble recovery was ridiculous. It was the penalties that went uncalled that did us the most damage - OPI with Iowa State and Tech, block in the back on Austin's punt return to put WVU up near the end of the 4th, the double holding on OU's long TD run.

Was it the Iowa State game where we got hit with back to back personal fouls? I think it was. They dinged Maponga for diving for the fumble that the refs never saw.

Really I think it's perception at work. You tend to notice/remember those that go against your team far, far, far more than you notice the calls that go for. Oddly enough, the opponents see things precisely oppositely.

I would say an inordinate amount of calls were REVERSED against us. But in general it was about 2/3 of calls went against us and 1/3 for us. You can check my YouTube channel for all the questionables.

It would be interesting to see the numbers, but frankly, looking back over the season, it doesn't feel like an inordinate number of reviews went against us. Some went our way, some didn't. Some I agreed with, some I didn't. But I didn't notice any particular streak one way or the other.

I still don't understand how they call it a fumble with the ball flys forward out of Boykins hand. Happened at least twice to him this year

The ball flying forward isn't indicative of anything. It could mean Boykin had begun his passing motion, but it could mean the momentum of the hit simply knocked the ball forward when Boykin lost the handle. It certainly doesn't prove he was in the act of passing.
