Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: WVU's defense, strong all night, falters down the final stretch

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — That snapshot right there, that's the moment it ended.

Sure, Jaden Oberkrom still needed to hit a 37-yard field goal to win it, but West Virginia lost this game when it lost Kolby Listenbee over top of a simply Cover 3 during the two-minute drill. Listenbee couldn't have been more wide open. He caught Trevone Boykin's pass and sprinted for a 40-yard gain to step up the eventual winner.

What happened is pretty simple.

"We had 10 guys playing one defense and one guy not," Tony Gibson said.

Gibson, the first-year defensive coordinator, didn't name who that outlier was. He was given ample opportunity to call the guy out but never did. It was Karl Joseph, which is obvious if you take a peek at the replay. Joseph, the high safety in the clip, cheats up, and when he sees the running back start toward the flat, he follows. That leaves Daryl Worley without help over top as Listenbee breaks into the open, and it's off to the races.

Cover 3 was the "same stuff we were playing all night," Gibson said, "and the kid [Boykin] couldn't complete a pass on us. He was 12 of 30." ...
