OU Press Conference

Appreciate guys that love to coach the game. You want to get where opposing team doesn't like you.

Trend of firing coordinators? nature of media and fan bases. no patience. he was good enough to go to BCS game last year.

Ive had 4-5 death threats. usually because of alcohol or gambling.

I've always prepared that this is my last game. i won't ever be surprised.

Been head coach 18 years. We all know everyone. I think Mike and Lincoln are good friends. We all get it. I don't think fans understand the pressure, its not easy to win. the margin is so narrow. one guy can be the difference.

This is where I am starting to get a little perturbed with this Gary speak. First off, no coach should ever get death threats or any type of physical threat. Whoever does that is a complete low life, but the world we live in has it's bad apples everywhere. Second, I love GP and always will for what he has done for this program and the way he goes about teaching college boys to be young men. I truly believe he cares for his players and everyone around his program and I have a lot of respect for that.

All that being said, he is making more and more comments about how coaching is hard, not easy to win games, and the margin is narrow. I think every rational being would agree that its not easy but lots of things in life aren't easy. You get paid $5MM+ a year to have that tough job. He makes comments about the lack of patience etc. GP has one of the most comfortable jobs in the country. He can go 4-8 one year and no one blinks an eye. Kevin Sumlin got run out of College station for winning 8 games in the SEC west every year except 1.

Saban has won a million national championships and even he get's tough questions. If you want to be elite then you need to take responsibility and not accept only scoring 14 points vs. Tech when everyone and their mom scores 40+. GP has been here 18 years and I hope he stays for as long as he wants, that's the patience I have. But the, college football is hard, woe is me attitude that has been creeping in is a little frustrating.

Edit: It sounds like he wasn't necessarily speaking for himself but more for Mike Stoops (I didn't watch the presser). But I think it is even more of an example that OU, despite winning multiple B12 championships, is still willing to fire a DC midseason because they expect more. Not saying we need to fire anyone but GP should expect more.

Turnovers - you have to being careful about not talking about it too much. like tackling. Not tackling - not healthy, tired. Offensively, game hasn't slowed down yet or trying to do too much. When you get older, it slows down. It won't be Andy Dalton. 2007 vs Air Force. We have ball on 30, we need a run, he checks the fade, gets intercepted and we lose in OT. I don't think he would have won Rose Bowl without handling losses, Fiesta Bowl

Can't tear down your own kids too much. What are you going to do next time. They are people. that's an art that's being forgotten. how do you manage attitude and confidence level
Can't coddle them too much either.

How's the moral of the towel girl? She looks like she could use some help. Maybe Gary could cut back on the crank before the game.

Only two teams have scored 40 on Tech this season.

OL vs Tech,? only scored 14 points. Came down to 5-6 plays.

Satisfied with playcalling and tempo? Wouldn't discuss that here. we have to get better. even when i made changes in 2013, those coaches were good enough to win rose bowl. our job is to give them every opportunity within the scheme and not put them in harm's way. RB not having as good a season. we have to be more physical.
Interesting quote.

He just signed an extended contract through 2024 I believe. Wouldn’t surprise me if he hangs it up after that though...

If he keeps coaching, he'll keep getting extensions, that's the way it works. He'll quit coaching when he wants to quit, how many years are left on his contract is irrelevant.

Another useless press conference.

Good catch my bad. Still like to think it's unacceptable for our offense to only muster 14 against Tech. But I think you would agree that has already been discussed ad nauseam here. My point wasn't really to bring up our offensive woes but more GPs deflecting that coaching football is harder than us fans think. Unless I am interpreting it in my own way, I feel like this has been more and more common. He is making little excuses here and there and then get's upset when asked tough questions. I believe he expects a lot more but outwardly he is seeming more complacent.

As much as I like to bag on pressers for their check the box/no info reality, GP has offered some nuggets of wisdom this year. More of a "state of the game" type wisdom. Saban has done the same thing.
I wish we had local media like Bama. Would be cool to see the Coaches at TCU, University of North Texas and SMU get more coverage other than what they get a few minutes a week during their coaches shows on FOX Southwest.

I don't think there's any doubt he lacks some of the fire he had 10-15 years ago, but that's only normal, he's not 45 anymore. That's hopefully offset by just becoming better at the job through experience. I wouldn't call it complacency though.
