My 95 year-old mother just got admitted to Texas Health Huguley Hospital for a UTI.

The UTI really threw her for a loop. She has been hallucinating and just incoherent for since Monday. We thought it was some heavy duty pain medication she was on for arthritis but it was a very dirty catheter.

Any prayers or thoughts would be appreciated.

I know exactly how you feel…this has happened several times with my 92 year old Mom, and it is scary and frustrating. But each time she bounced back and is doing well. Prayers for her recovery. God bless.

I pray for better caregivers.
Catheters that are watched for problems and changed before they’re filthy and clogged.
The assisted living facility where she is doesn't do any medical stuff.
There is a nurse that changes the catheter but insurance only pays for it once a month. It had only been in since Feb. 19.
She hadn't had a UTI since last year but has never been this bad.

Did I read in a baseball thread that it was your birthday yesterday or the day before?

If correct I hope your gift is a swift and full recovery for your mom. And, happy birthday.

My mom lived in a highly ranked facility for years. They provided a variety of ongoing testing and rehab. The one thing they didn’t do was offer regular urinalysis for UTI. I can’t think of a more obvious service offering for people in that age category. UTI’s cause some very weird and scary side effects. Collecting a clean sample makes it more difficult but come on figure it out. She did have a urologist give her a prescription for an anti-bacterial ointment to apply regularly “down there” to help prevent bacteria from getting into the urinary tract. But then they have to be able to remember to do it. Tough problem.

My 87 year old mother had Alzheimers but then contracted a bad UTI and spiraled downhill in the hospital for a week, became very weak, and then placed in a nursing home and I am convinced the rapid deteriation that continued was from a bad UTI. I suspect it quickly came back in the nursing home due to poor follow-up testing or never completely cleared. In the end, she was hallucinating, seeing herself falling down a hole at her feet. Cause of death statement stated heart stoppage complicated by Alzheimers and UTI. People involved thought the Alzheimer’s caused the hallucinating and death, but I don’t believe it; they didn’t clear the UTI. She was doing well enough at home on October 1, in the hospital with UTI at Christmas and died in February in the nursing home. I flew with her on October 1 to return her to their winter home and she was happy enough and cooperative, and that included a connecting plane in O’Hare. My dad drove his car.

@PurpleBlood87, do the best you can at getting that UTI cleared and then follow-up testing to confirm it has not returned. My dad was always told to get her to drink water because elderly do not feel thirst so they don’t pee enough.

I’m so sorry. UTIs are so common in elderly women and can be quite painful. I hope she heals quickly and completely. She must be fairly resilient if she has lived to the age of 95.

Sending healing prayers to her from California.
