Joe LaMagna at The Fried Egg called Colonial "a golf course that punches back when you color outside the lines." In addition to the rough and trees, he mentioned other factors that make Colonial tough:
  1. fairways set at angles
  2. punishment of wide misses
  3. greens unreceptive to out-of-position approaches
No surprise that the guy who won was the Tour leader in driving accuracy and scrambling.

LaMagna also pointed out that Colonial's contrast to typical Tour venues has become a distinct advantage for keeping its place on the schedule. The Tour needs events that occasionally reward skills other than driving distance and putting.
Colonial is like Harbour Town in that where you land even when coloring inside the lines can nix the idea of birdie quickly.
I can't imagine having to play the championship tees on either. One hot morning in South Carolina, I got my teeth kicked in from the "members" tees. Thankful they were not using the hybrid tee markers that day.

Hopefully will get a more favorable date next year, maybe Scheffler and Spieth will come back.
It's the week after the PGA is held in Frisco. The Golf Channel and Tour folks (and tourney folks) think that will get a bunch of stars (much like Harbour Town and the Nelson) due to being the week after and some wanting to get after it when playing well but not winning. The Nelson is in April (not ideal for that tourney due to the type of grass).
basically, its a gamble for both. lol.

Are they expecting to have problems with zoysia in April in Dallas?

Sorry, that was me mocking the whole reaction to the calendar recently. The whole griping they had about the date was zoysia needs more of the warmer weather to fully green back up from winter.
If I remember correctly, they have an end of April date next year. It aint like this is Wisconsin.

Lol. Got it. I play in a senior tour pro-am in Atlanta every year in late April / first of May on Zoysia. They have no problems in Atlanta, and their climate is no different from Dallas, really. Turf conditions are fantastic. AI says Atlanta on average is 2 degrees cooler.

I think that zoysia only needs it to reach the 80s to green out.
I mean, I get it, though. Next year's calendar is gonna be odd. You have Augusta, then Harbour Town (signature) than the Nelson is two weeks after that (I think). I'm sure they would have rather have been the week before the PGA.

The Nelson doesn't get many big name players at all. I think Scheffler, Si Woo Kim and Spieth were the only OWGR Top 50 players in the field, and they all live in Dallas. And I think Harbour Town only gets them because it's a Signature Event.

As long as Colonial is sandwiched somewhat around a major and is not a Signature event, its field will be so-so at best. Same with just about any other tournament. That all changes if it somehow lands Signature event status.

As Wexahu pointed out, and as I've pointed out several times, Nelson and Colonial are victims of being on a terribly crowded April / May schedule. Without that Signature status, the fields are going to suffer. Because they can't play 40 events a year, top players schedule around money/FedEx points and majors. That means the 20 or so least valuable events get weaker fields. As bad as Craig Ranch may be, if it was a Signature event, they'd have a great field.

If they scheduled tournaments around optimal turf conditions, they'd play the US Open in mid or late September in the Northeast. But there's not enough daylight in September for 156 players, and fans would be more interested in football. Nobody gets what they want, because you can't line up everything to work perfectly. Except the Masters.

I say move the Masters to July and see how it plays for them.

Not sure why I was thinking the Nelson had as many as Colonial.

Watching Memorial while at the office.
Looks nice. The scenery and weather, I mean.
I'm guessing golf in Ohio in the summer is a pretty nice time. Thinking I may need to think about vacation strategy for next year.

look at the field. colonial blows unless you're from fw.

it will not be on the tour 5 years from now.
