Just looked at the specs, 100hp rotax motor, max speed of 109 mph

It also has a parachute.

Complete Aircraft Parachute (CAP)
Safe and Sound. CAP technology has more than 300 documented lives saved, some at altitudes as low as a few hundred feet. So if you encounter the unexpected, we’ve got you covered. Literally.

Amateur piloting is not a safe activity...so sad
Actually general aviation flying is not that unsafe an activity. Statistically, it is probably safer than driving a car. However to quote Inspector Harry Callahan "a man has to know his limitation".

"Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect." Captain A. G. Lamplugh, British Aviation Insurance Group, London. c. early 1930's.

He liked to fly it low over the water at max speed like a fighter pilot. The plane even has an angle of attack indicator which is not normal.

His father was a corporate pilot so he grew up around flying.

General aviation, yes. However, small aircraft are about 20 times as dangerous as driving a car. If you factor in being an amateur pilot, it’s probably even higher

I don't understand the urge to make comments like those in this thread, so soon after a tragedy of unknown cause.

Prayers for the family.

With all due respect, I don't think his family is reading this board.

Sad news, and people are just saying what they are thinking, trying to make sense of it.
