Dykes wants that and said that in a recent interview and made it sound like it will be strongly considered this year. It makes it clean and simple - five consecutive years to play as much as you want or can, period, and I assume Dykes assumed JC would count too. No medical waivers or redshirts needed. It makes sense, maybe, though I guess it comes at a cost to high school kids having fewer opportunities at FBS because more student athletes will be occupying a scholarship in that 5th consecutive year.I read somewhere they are pondering a new 5 year across the board rule.
Maybe open up the NFL draft at a younger age to help offset that?Dykes wants that and said that in a recent interview and made it sound like it will be strongly considered this year. The bigger issue impacting scholarship availability is the portal.Maybe open up the NFL draft at a younger age to help offset that?
How so? Wouldn't the new school take over the scholarship? The bigger issue impacting scholarship availability is the portal.
If the concern is with players extending their time at a school and using a scholarship slot that would normally go to a HS player then the practice of hopping to a different school every year through the portal with zero consequences needs to be addressed. Why waste a scholarship on a player that will require development time when you can go to the portal and get a 2 or 3 year starter? How so? Wouldn't the new school take over the scholarship?
Heard an interesting perspective from former Viking Xavier Rhodes. He said that players bouncing between multiple schools can hurt them, because the stability of playing for the same school/coaches helps them develop (coaches get to know their skills and tendencies and can fix/work on shortcomings). If the concern is with players extending their time at a school and using a scholarship slot that would normally go to a HS player then the practice of hopping to a different school every year through the portal with zero consequences needs to be addressed. I can see that. I can envision a world where the Alabama's of the world are using schools like Utah State as minor leagues. Send us your late bloomers! Bama gets them to run same O and D and shares tips on strength and conditioning. Then some kid who didn't develop fast enough for the SEC in high school but catch on later can transfer in.If the concern is with players extending their time at a school and using a scholarship slot that would normally go to a HS player then the practice of hopping to a different school every year through the portal with zero consequences needs to be addressed. If the two solutions on the table are lower the eligibility age for the NFL draft and reforming the portal process, then the portal is the best option. When players suffer no consequences for transferring they'll happily continue playing for as long as they have eligibility, which inflates the number of available players across the country. Eligibility penalties need to be reinstated (not sure how at this point) as scholarships are already set and finite. In the past, a player that has graduated after four years and is riding the bench would not have been able to transfer to another school for a year five. The portal certainly reduces the availability of scholarships for freshmen at the school the player is transferring to, but wouldn't it open scholarships at the school the portal player is transferring from?
Same number of schollys available, just not necessarily where the freshmen might want them.
Except they have also increased the number of scholarships schools can provide for football. So from a technical perspective there are more scholarship slots to be had at the D1 level than there was 2 years ago.If the concern is with players extending their time at a school and using a scholarship slot that would normally go to a HS player then the practice of hopping to a different school every year through the portal with zero consequences needs to be addressed. Yeah, but the U don't care. That's going to be the landing place for all the straight mercenary types - well that and SMU...Heard an interesting perspective from former Viking Xavier Rhodes. Not earth shattering news but something we don't necessarily consider.
and to judo transfers who still have 4 years left to play.
Valid point. With NIL deals, does the scholly limit matter any more? Why does Arch Manning need a scholarship?
What did his post say?Wondering if this had anything to do with him taking down that post:

Former Wisconsin DB Xavier Lucas leaving school for Miami without entering transfer portal in a groundbreaking move
Wisconsin refused to enter Lucas into the portal after he requested a transfer, but he's off to Miami regardless in a groundbreaking move that may have ramifications across college football.sports.yahoo.com
If that is allowed you can say goodbye to the portal and that might be the end of college football.Wondering if this had anything to do with him taking down that post:

Lets talk about the opt outs for bowl games being required to buy their own disability insurance!!! Anyone else watch many/any bowl games that had the best players sitting out??? They better get as many bowls as possible included in the CFP!!!Valid point.
